CHRONOLOGY - Journalists Killed in Iraq in '05

A Reuters Television soundman was shot dead in Baghdad on Sunday and a cameraman with him was wounded and then detained by U.S. soldiers.

Iraqi police said they had been shot by U.S. forces. A U.S. military spokesman said the incident was being investigated.

More than 40 foreign and Iraqi journalists have been reported killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003.

The real number is believed to be higher and the list does not include the many translators, drivers and other media assistants said by media watchdogs to have died since the start of the conflict.

Here is a short chronology of those reported killed in 2005.

- Feb 9, 2005 - Abdul-Hussein Khazal, Basra correspondent of the U.S.-funded television station Alhurra, is shot dead.

1. Practically all had Arebic sounding names

Practically all the names of the journalists killed in Iraq had Arabic names. Why are these people dying and not Western journalists?

Are our brave embedded journalists just enjoying the creature comforts of the 'Green Zone' too much to go out and report what is really happening over there, or are they just satisfied reporting the military briefing propaganda? Where are the John Laurance's of this war?
