"Democrats will say or do anything to get back in power." |
|
We hear that from Repubs all the time. But on the other hand....
Republicans will say or do anything to stay in power. Which position is the most political. Well, it depends on what you are saying and what you are doing or not doing.

2. True for Repubs, this is a principle of Southern/Calvanist politics. |
|
Not true for Democrats who have a much more process driven politics--i.e ends do not justify the means for Democrats.
There is some cross over, some Repubs who dont believe the ends justify the means and some Dems who will do anything for power, but in general the two parties differ in this respect and they attract members who believe in these two different principles.

I am learning so much from the book penned in 1940. It is still applicable now. Calvanists believe in predetermination. Calvanism was useful in the slave owning South because it could be twisted to say that God meant for slaves to be slaves and for white people to be their masters, freeing whites from a lot of guilt. It also could be twisted to say that wealthy whites were meant to be wealthy and to be in charge and that poor whites were meant to follow the lead of wealthy whites, and that God was very happy with people who accepted their role in society. If you suceeded, it meant that God meant for you to suceed, so it didnt much matter what you did to suceed, as long as it worked out in your favor. This meant that it didnt matter how you aquired your cotton plantation and slaves, as long as the endeavor made you rich, it was a sign of God's blessing. In politics, it didnt matter if you swift boated your opponent in order to win the election, once you won, it was a sign that God wanted you to win.

6. OK. I'm Southern and I don't think that way. |
|
I don't know many who do. Therefore, I don't think it's as applicable as you think.
This may be our heritage, but we've come a lot further than many people on this board give us credit for.
For example, I would harken to say that race relations here is better than in other parts of the country. Sure, there is still racism, but it's out in the open and dealt with, not swept under the rug.
There are some people who believe in predestination to this day, I'm sure, but they're not all located below the Mason-Dixon Line.

3. My favorite Resmuglican talking point about sElection '04 |
|
Edited on Fri Sep-09-05 11:00 AM by Rob H.
from another board: "Democrats can't run on the issues so they're trying to win by spreading fear." Uh, yeah, that's why the Department of Homeland Security was issuing terror alerts what seemed like every other day and we've had what, one since the election? The Democrats are preying on people's fears? R-r-ri-i-i-i-i-ght.
:eyes:
On edit: My other favorite that was almost as pants-around-the-ankles-falling-face-forward-into-cream-pies idiotic was, "Well, the Democrats just don't like Bush, but they can't give any reasons to vote against him other than that."

I think that's one of the things that separates us and them, and I also think maybe why they seem to have some odd sort of inferiority complex (odd because they usually try to act superior & righteous).
We hold ourselves to higher standards on the things that really matter, and probably most of them know this at least subconsciously.
Bush said 200,000 troops is good enough for Iraq.
Democrats said "Thats not good enough".
Rumsfeld says "We fight with the army we have, not the one we might want."
Democrats said "That's not good enough, they need better armor".
They don't hold the idea of facts and truths up to the same standard we do, or they wouldn't lie as often as they do.
Even now the vast majority of republicans are indirectly stating through their political action (because just coming out and saying it would be political suicide...hopefully) "We don't really care if we launched the war in Iraq for fraudulent reasons, or how much money goes missing, or how corrupt this whole process has been, or who is responsible." while democrats are screaming for accountability to the extent that they can with republicans controlling everything.

8. Once again, projection. |

Repukes are constantly accusing Democrats of doing what THEY do. It's a pretty classic mental illness.

9. Whining has worked very well for them |
|
Our side tends to not whine enough I think. We are told by fox news we do nothing but complain and obstruct, but that's what an effective opposing party needs to do. Look how Newt Gingrich played it during Clinton's tenure, they had nothing concrete to complain about cause Clinton was a good republican that ran things very effectively so they just made up a lot of shit and smeared it all over the place. We've got a huge list of concrete complaints about George, but can't seem to gain much ground with it.

What about bush's campaign promises? The only one he kept was cutting taxes. The rest were forgotten as soon as the Supreme Court anointed him chimperor. I agree some politicians will do or say anything but their side is FAR from immune to that. At least our side doesn't crap on your head and expect a thankyou(trickle-down economics is good for everyone!; your kids are dying in Iraq for our freedom; free market $70 oil is good for the economy; sending your job to China will be good for you in the long run)
