CNN reports food, water stocked in SuperDome was evidently not distributed
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0509/09/ldt.01.html

DOBBS: Jeanne, Michael Chertoff sounded almost as though he was promoting Michael Brown in those terms that he used. What is his likely future?

MESERVE: Well, that's a big question at this point in time. I just talked to an official from the Department of Homeland Security, who says, as far as he knows at this point in time, no letter of resignation has been submitted.

He also told me a little bit of the back story about Chertoff's decision, which was reached last night. He told Brown this morning. He said that Chertoff talked to a lot of people and saw a lot of stuff down there in the Gulf region and was, quote, "appalled," unquote, at some of what he saw and heard, including a visit to the Superdome, where he pressed issues for answers on the food and water that was stocked in there, whether it has been distributed. Didn't get the kinds of answers he wanted.

As this official said to me, Chertoff is a results kind of guy. Apparently, he thinks that the admiral is going to give him better results than Michael Brown -- Lou.

DOBBS: Accountability in government, a remarkable concept. Thank you very much, Jeanne Meserve.

Food and water may have been stocked in the Superdome and not distributed to people who were dying of dehydration? Incomprehensible, inexcusable and utterly disgraceful!

1. Also unlikely
Thousands of bored and hungry people would have been all over that Dome while they were waiting...or looking for a quiet place to bunk down.

2. Chertoff did not get satisfactory answers as to where food was distibuted.
I read this to mean that the food may well not have been distributed, and Chertoff found this, shall we say, unsatisfactory.

4. I don't believe them...
The key phrase is "may have been" stocked...Chertoff is just tryig to spin this....because there is no way of telling if it is the truth.

With all the pillaging and ransacking that was going on in the Superdome....if there REALLY was water and food there....THE PEOPLE WOULD HAVE FOUND IT!

I find it hard to believe anyone could be this inept. Someone needs to find out if this is, indeed, true.

10. I agree...
Chertoff is claiming that the Superdome was stocked with food and water. I think he is lying.

13. Who stocked the food and water Chertoff is talking about?
Is he talking about the food and beverages stocked by vendors in the Superdome?

Or is he talking about food stocked there by the federal government for use in this emergency?

He could be talking about the food and water that vendors would ordinarily stock for sale.

8. I don't care where the food was. It didn't get to people who needed it.

They want to make a case for "bureaucracy being bad" well that is bullshit. Nobody looses food. If you are FEMA and you loose it along with 20,000 people, then you are willfully not doing your job. Even the least efficient communist manager did better than this.

The issue is not bureaucracy - in it the purposeful diminishment of important government institutions with the philosophy that private corporations & religious groups will take over. LA was a grand experiment. A grand marketing device to sell the end of government.

The Red Cross has been diminished along with. Also a payoff. Because now money can be diverted to Christian groups who are owed money & power for giving the world Bush. A family compact if ever there was one. But I didn't see any of the private security corporations run in and fill the void? Where were the ministers? It was students on the nation's campuses & journalists, celebrities, & men who still have access to the normal compassion of an adult who rushed in to fill the void.

Absolutely disgusting experiment and game with the lives of thousands. Only sociopaths and people who have had their heads filled with Utopian garbage of the coldest kind would look at the old and the children on T.V. and shake their head and say "they were told to leave".

9. There was no food stored at the Superdome
because it was only opened has a shelter of last resort Sunday morning and was not intended to be used for a shelter when they did disaster planning because the Red Cross would not certify the Superdome has a safe shelter.

There was a report before the storm hit of one delivery of enough MRE's to feed about 10,000 people for 2 days. From the reports at the time it sounded like the people did receive the food from that shipment.

Also prior to the storm, Nagin told the people over and over that they did not have food at the Superdome and to bring enough to eat and drink for 4 to 5 days.

Once the Superdome was opened, FEMA should have shipped in trucks full of food and water but it appears they only made a feeble attempt.

11. The problem we are going to have is that we know who not
to believe, I am not certain we know whom to believe. The story about the delivery of food and water to the Super Dome is beginning to circulate. Supposedly small FEMA teams were prepositioned in the city. How could they have brought in supplies and not established a way to distribute them? How could all those people have been sent to the Super Dome and there be no one in authority to take control of the situation? One of the things that haunts my memory is repeated interviews with people congregated there asking why no one was telling them what to do, where to go, how to get food, water and supplies. This is the most fubar operation I have seen in my 59 years.
