A great Bill Maher show tonite on HBO
George Carlin and some guy from the AEI....debating the talking points on Katrina, George Bush, etc.

The AEI guy isn't defending himself very well and admits that neither Bush nor his PR team are doing a good job.

1. Was great, George whupped butt and so did bill and the Atlanta Journal
writer. Glassman is an idiot. He wrote this book about five years ago (LOL). I was just waiting for one of the people to say, "Jim, by the way, when do you think the DOW will hit 36,000...you fucking idiot." Would have made him walk off.

Proves anyone can get published.
No idea is too idiotic.

14. I was hoping they'd throw this book in his face, too.
That's all these RW fanatics care about: personal wealth and greed. Their stock portfolios are more important to them than what the Bible REALLY says. Just the thought of a Dow at 36,000 probably gives this freak a hard-on.

"I lived in NO... the 'public housing' problem has been bad for years." Translation: All those poor black folk who had no choice but to live in government housing really dragged the property values of the city down.

Asshole. What the hell has to be missing in Wingnuts' genetic make-up to make them THINK and SPEAK this way?

I wish Bill wouldn't give these whack-jobs so much time to talk. But, I have to admit, Carlin's faces and well-timed jabs said a lot more than telling him off outright. Cynthia Tucker was really good, too, but didn't get enough rebuttal time, imo.

20. I agree, the guy is a total racist. Also AEI is the origin of racist Bell
Curve theory on genetic superiority in intelligence of "white" people.

What a "Little Shop of Horrors" AEI is. A vomitorium!

They are part of our national shame.

23. Haven't seen the show - if the AEI is the "American Enterprise Institute,"
they're also the cradle of the PNAC. It's from the loins of the American Enterprise Institute that the PNACers and neoCONS sprang. The loins of The Beast. The AEI is the hatchery for some of the worst, stingey-est, most selfish, most bottom-feeding, most loathsome me-first IGMFU Mark-of-Cain policies that are holding our nation, and our souls, hostage. The American Enterprise Institute, like the Cato Institute and the Hoover Institute, and the Heritage Foundation and all those other outfits are nothing more than Satan's Workshops. That's where they hatch the work of the devil.

15. It's repeated at 12midnight on Saturday on HBOPE.
I just checked for another friend who wanted to catch Walter Maestri, his first interview, NOLA emergency management, who has been warning of dire things to come, for years. The entire show was excellent, but it was worth watching, just to hear him...

5. Love Carlin
And he hates Dems and Republicans pretty equally - but his points about the ownership society caring only about property was right on.

and, considering how much authority the corporations have with even the Dems, he's not whistling in the dark.

17. I love George Carlin, too, always have.
He's one of only two comedians who can actually make me laugh. But I was very disheartened to learn, in the run up to the election, that he never votes...

18. Carlin is an anarchist
Like my SO. My SO is one of the most generous, ethical people I know, but he, like Carlin, hates all politicians because he believes they feed off of people's needs and that most "governing" should come through community relationships. He and Peter Werbe grew their politics together, helping the poor in Detroit back in the 1960's and early '70's The only vote he ever cast was for McGovern.

21. Thanks for the information. I come late to politics. I always voted, but
it took the terror of 9/11 to really wake me up and bring me to DU. And I had been listening to George Carlin, and what he had to say about all that was going wrong in this country. I agreed with so much of it, so was very disappointed when I learned that he didn't even vote. I was aware enough in 2000 to be profoundly disappointed, but the last one just ripped my heart out. I wouldn't have survived it without the support of DU. I spent a lot of time in that "help and support" forum, or whatever it was called. :-) I just felt physically ill. And I listened to George McGovern's remarks on the hurricane relief efforts with my SO, just last weekend. We were very disappointed when he said that we should wait to assign any blame. My first vote, ever in my life, was for him.:-(

...George Carlin is a fucking genius. He is tearing this guy up. The problem is that Glassman thinks that he is the smartest guy in the room, and that Carlin is just a comedian. Sorry asshole, wrong again.

16. I once saw Carlin when he was here in Boston, and
he says he never votes. He doesn't believe in it, because he thinks it's all a "scam" to lull the masses into thinking they have a say in the government. This keeps them from "revolt".

Richard Belzer says and believes the same thing. He has gone so far as to live in France as his primary residence.

A lot of very smart people believe this. I always thought it was the off-shoot of the cynicical sort of comedy they both do. Now, I'm coming to see that the comedy they do is inspired and informed by the cynicism they feel about the government and life in America.

Maybe they both have something there. Maybe this is all a scam. Who knows?

But, what choice do we have until we know for sure? If we stop voting, we could end up with an evil stooge for a President, backed by a Fascist regime bent on tearing the Constitution to shreds, and looting the Treasury for all it is worth, with constant war as a smoke-screen... :sarcasm:

See what he's saying? Maybe it is all a scam.

TC

19. Carlin is absolutely right
We'll all know this for sure after the next election that they (the GOP 06 and 08) would never legititmately win after Katrina and Iraq. Until there are paper ballots we are all fucked.

Good Morning DU! :eyes:

22. Emma Goldman quote...
"If Voting Changed Anything, They'd Make It Illegal"

Emma Goldman for President

http://www.counterpunch.org/nimmo03202004.html

In her famous essay, "Anarchism: what it really stands for," Emma quotes Thoreau, who said, "All voting is a sort of gaming, like checkers, or backgammon, a playing with right and wrong; its obligation never exceeds that of expediency. Even voting for the right thing is doing nothing for it. A wise man will not leave the right to the mercy of chance, nor wish it to prevail through the power of the majority."

Elections, Goldman knew, consist primarily of "wire-pulling, intriguing, flattering, lying, cheating; in fact, chicanery of every description, whereby the political aspirant can achieve success. Added to that is a complete demoralization of character and conviction, until nothing is left that would make one hope for anything from such a human derelict. Time and time again the people were foolish enough to trust, believe, and support with their last farthing aspiring politicians, only to find themselves betrayed and cheated."

28. at least he said "Governor" is the last position W was elected for
I give him credit for it as many people fooled by Kerry's quick concession forget that the 2004 election was also stolen.
But, yeah, I heard the not voting comment earlier on and it bothered me too.

George Carlin was superb and really put Glassman in his place. He finally got him to admit that Bush didn't do a good job. Glassman also said that he was a "Libertarian." Hehehe, he's just ashamed to be a Republican so he won't even admit to it. What a phony.
