Ditch Holocaust day, advisers urge Blair
Abul Taher

ADVISERS appointed by Tony Blair after the London bombings are proposing to scrap the Jewish Holocaust Memorial Day because it is regarded as offensive to Muslims.

They want to replace it with a Genocide Day that would recognise the mass murder of Muslims in Palestine, Chechnya and Bosnia as well as people of other faiths.

The draft proposals have been prepared by committees appointed by Blair to tackle extremism. He has promised to respond to the plans, but the threat to the Holocaust Day has provoked a fierce backlash from the Jewish community.

Holocaust Day was established by Blair in 2001 after a sustained campaign by Jewish leaders to create a lasting memorial to the 6m victims of Hitler. It is marked each year on January 27.

2. What holocaust?
Haven't you noticed how the Holocaust is disappearing from the world's consciousness? Has anyone realized how many books and articles have been written lately that rewrite history saying such things as few Jews died in Germany, most emigrated, blah, blah, blah? Has anyone read in their local papers how Jewish graves have been desecrated with increasing frequency in Europe and in the US?

In ten more years it will become impolite to even mention
Holocaust when referring to the Shoa.

If Israel were to be overrun today by radical Islamic hordes, will the world shed any tears for the new Holocaust, or will they sing and dance in the streets of Cairo... Illinois?

3. Well, that was offensive.
I don't think rational people ignore the Holocaust; however, there's nothing that says rational people can't ALSO recognize the pains the Palestinians have and are enduring.

Or maybe the fact that I have a Palestinian ex-husband and a Jewish fiance makes me able to recognize both as having valid reasons for wanting to preserve their history.

(And, I'm a lapsed Catholic, if you were just wanting to know.)
