at least temporarily. "I have done nothing wrong ... I am innocent," DeLay told a Capitol Hill news conference in which he criticized the prosecutor, Ronnie Earle, repeatedly. DeLay called Earle an "unabashed partisan zealot" and a "fanatic."

6. This is the heart of the ugliness, not just some peripheral crime |

As Molly Ivins put it, it's awfully hard to screw with Texas law, but this is a pretty clear case.
This was the money laundering that allowed an unfair advantage to Republicans in their bid to take over state government. By funneling monies to Bugboy's PAC which were then "given" back to individual candidates, corporations and others were able to gush much more money into the Texas races than by any legal methods. This gave them the edge to take power and overturn the redistricting done in the quaint old way by the legislature as it stood at the decade mark mandated by the fuddy-duddy Constitution of the United States.
This isn't a technicality, this is a core violation of the spirit and letter of the law; it was extremely deliberate, and Tommyrot was the leader of the band.
He used every trick possible to violate the law, and he deeply violated the spirit of our covenant of coexistence: we live by elections and obey the will of the people. His effort was to overturn the will of the people and refuse to accept pluralism. He's a creep of the worst kind, and it shows.

9. Does this make the gerrymandering illegal too? |
|
I am coming in rather late on some of this.
If Delay goes down, is convicted, etc., what does that do to the redistricting? Because isn't that even more important than Delay himself? Is there any companion lawsuit to undo the damage done from these crimes? Or, is it a done deal, giving the Republicans increased control in Texas forever?
