Governor's husband gets call from 'Commander in Chief' creators

LANSING - In the new ABC drama, "Commander in Chief," the character played by actor Kyle Secor goes from being chief of staff to the vice president - who happens to be his wife - to being dragged through the White House kitchen and asked about the daily menus once his wife becomes president.

Dan Mulhern knows a little bit of what first man Rod Allen is going through. Mulhern, a former management consultant, had to quit his business and take more of a role in raising the kids once his wife, Jennifer Granholm, became Michigan's first female governor 2 1/2 years ago.

He shared those experiences with the "Commander in Chief" writers, who called him to discuss what Rod Allen might face in the show.

"Since I'm usually thinking about leadership, I just talked about what it's like to watch leadership near at hand and what it's like for a male in that position," Mulhern told The Associated Press on Friday. "I talked a little bit about the challenges and the opportunities of being in the position of servant and secondary support."

1. Mulhern comes across as a decent guy in interviews.
I don't know if he's going to cash in later after his wife is no longer governor, but a lot of spouses, male or female, wouldn't do what he has done for his family. A lot of family members would be trading on their spouse's position today (of course, ABC probably did pay him for this, but it's not like he's weilding huge influence on America's TV watchers through this work).

Here's his Wikipedia bio:

Daniel Mulhern (born January 3, 1958) is the First Gentleman (husband of Jennifer Granholm, the governor) of the U.S. state of Michigan. He is the first First Gentleman of the state, as Granholm is the state's first female governor.
Mulhern was born in Detroit, Michigan, to Mary and Jack Mulhern and grew up in the cities of Inkster and Lathrup Village. As the oldest boy, he took care of his younger siblings. In Detroit, he attended University of Detroit Jesuit High School. While considering priesthood, he majored in and received his degree in religious studies at Yale in 1980. After teaching theology at Tampa Jesuit High School, he moved to New Orleans and became Executive Director of a charitable community center called "THE Center". He met his wife, Jennifer Granholm, while continuing his education at Harvard Law School and they married in 1986. After Harvard, Mulhern practiced law in Detroit. He worked for U.S. Representative Sander Levin, directed Wayne County's youth services, and founded the Mulhern Hastings Group in 1999.
Mulhern completed the October 24, 2004 Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon in 162nd place, at 4:00'49". He was joined for the last two miles by his wife and two daughters.
He and his wife have three children: Kathryn ('Kate'), 15; Cecilia ('C.J.', 'Cece'), 13; and Jack, 7. Like his wife, he is very athletic. He loves to run, play basketball with his daughters and cheer at their games, and find new things for his son to learn.
