DeLay hustles to replenish his voter pool
DeLay hustles to replenish his voter pool
By Rick Klein, Globe Staff | October 17, 2005

RICHMOND, Texas -- At a two-story community college across the street from a Wal-Mart, US Representative Tom DeLay jumped out of the back seat of his town car Wednesday morning, grinning wide and eager to shake some hands.

Sign up for: Globe Headlines e-mail | Breaking News Alerts He greeted trustees and shared a joke with maintenance workers. He introduced himself to a group of students who were sharing cigarettes, drinking Red Bull, and listening to a friend strum a guitar.

''Hi -- Tom DeLay," he said, smile fixed and hand outstretched. ''Thanks for letting us interrupt you."

This is DeLay Country, the Republican exurbs of Houston, and the embattled former House majority leader is trying to renew his claim here. But DeLay is scrambling for more than just beating two indictments related to allegedly illegal campaign activities and returning to his plush leadership office in the Capitol: He's fighting for his political life in next year's congressional election.

1. Delay can be defeated. 55 %, down from 65% and 70% in earlier elections
Good article. Nominated for Greatest page.

Delay can, must, and will, be defeated. In 2004 he got 55 percent of the vote, down from 65% and 70% in earlier elections. This is due to the redistricting that the rammed through. In order to make more Republican districts in Texas, they had to dilute the Republican vote in socalled safe districts to beef it up elsewhere. The result is that the Republican margin is thinner everywhere and Republicans are more vulnerable than they want you to know.

Delay can, must, and will, be defeated.

3.  Rep. (R) Conaway was holding a fund raiser here in Midland for
Tom DeLay. Fifty persons showed.

Mike Conaway is the Republican Representative in Congress in Texas' new 11th District.

5. Can't speak for his district, but in Austin, we don't.
However we are using another electronic tablet and I don't trust it either.
I have no doubt in a fair election, DeLay is doomed. - but there are lots of holdouts for him. People are going to believe what they wish and I won't go into that.

7. DeLay doesn't represent West Texas--which ISN'T totally red.

Look at the election map for 2004. Far West Texas is bluer than the Panhandle.

8. If Delay's district starts turning against him, watch for the voting
machines to come in. Will take care of any bad voter attitude real quick.

10. In a close race the machines work fine, but let's hope that
enough voters will vote Tom DeLay out.

11. That is the crucial part, keeping it a close race.
That is why you cannot have a free press.
A rigged press makes sure the race is tight.

And if all fails, you just rig the opinion polls.

See how easy it all is?

13. If he ever stretches his hand out to me I am ignoring it unless he is on
the ground and needs help getting up. Then I would help him out of Christian charity.
