Andrew Sullivan: "Bush and his favourite Brain are drifting apart"
Bush and his favourite Brain are drifting apart
Andrew Sullivan
SUNDAY TIMES

SNIP:

"Hanging over Washington is a zealous prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald, who has spent months getting to the root of who might have leaked the identity of Valerie Plame, an undercover CIA operative......

"The scope of his investigation suggests it might involve more than just a single, perhaps unwitting, crime. It might get into the core of the group that sold the country on the Iraq war. It’s enough to give Rove the the jitters — even if, as is still quite possible, he is cleared of wrongdoing.........
ENDSNIP.

1. "Unwitting crime." HA!
You have the best and the brightest of the Republican party in the White House doing what they do best: Cutting corners and playing the odds. They know it. It's business as usual. They just got caught. THAT's the end game.

2. Two questions
Why is Fitzgerald a "zealous" presecutor? He is investigating a crime which effects national security. The outing of a undercover agent effects our ability to recruit new sources of intellligence in foreign countries. Even if she was no longer undercover her sources are still at risk for their history with her. Would you give secret information to a foreign gov't that would risk your secrecy to payback a political foe?

Second what does "perhaps unwitting" mean? Whoever released Plame's name did it to payback Wilson for his column slamming pre-war intelligence. What part of that is unwitting? Unwitting that someone might pursue & prosecute them.

I can't understand why this case is so hard to comprehend.

3. When I hear "Bush's brain" I think of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.
At the Republican convention he shoulted at Rove (paraphrasing):

"They call you 'Bush's Brain.' I expected a much smaller man."

Then he turned to the camera,

"I'm a dead man."

5. It reminds me of "The President's Brain is Missing" - Spitting Image
satirical series, lampooning Ronnie Raygun:

4. "the core of the group that sold the country on the Iraq war": Fitzie
smoking out the TheoCon cabal bankrolled by the Saudis?

Some of the stench is coming from the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of St George, a Vatican slush-fund that was heavily doshed-up by the Saudis during the Bush2 WH 2000 campaign.

A little look at their list of gong recipients (Bandar, Thatcher, etc) gives the odd clue or two:
