House GOP leaders embrace spending cuts
Leadership shake-up, conservative backlash have spurred policy shift

Updated: 12:00 a.m. ET Oct. 17, 2005

House Republican leaders have moved from balking at big cuts in Medicaid and other programs to embracing them, driven by pent-up anger from fiscal conservatives concerned about runaway spending and the leadership's own weakening hold on power.

Beginning this week, the House GOP lawmakers will take steps to cut as much as $50 billion from the fiscal 2006 budget for health care for the poor, food stamps and farm supports, as well as considering across-the-board cuts in other programs. Only last month, then-House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) and other GOP leaders quashed demands within their party for budget cuts to pay for the soaring cost of hurricane relief.

Anything but tax the rich.
After all, the poor don't need to eat if they die from lack of health care.

1. Compassionate conservatism--the mother of all oxymorons.
Right up there with light beer and military intelligence.

2. Unca Dick gots to get paid
So a bunch of poor pathetic losers are going to die, boo freakin' hoo. That's nothing compared to the embarrassment Dick Cheney feels when he only sees eight figures in his net worth.

Why didn't they buy Halliburton stock? Losers.

{/sarcasm}

3. Isn't this just the best way to fight Bird flus and all the other scare
tactics from this admin??? These people are so lost they are closing the circle to a point that they'll hang themselves to tightly we might no see them in power for a long time.

In the meantime, how are our communities going to tolerate the damage this is going to cause. We can't continue donating to non-profits 'cause those of us who aren't desparetedly poor yet can't barely afford our own insurance cost, if we still have any.

This is really, really scary.

5. Satisfy the rich. For the rich. By the rich. Of the rich. The poor are
nothing - bring them closer to economic slavery - even the 90 year olds.

6. I voted for George Bush because he's a moral, church-going man.
I also have a dark spot the size of a grapefruit on my brain MRI.

Do you think there may be a connection?

11. You have to wonder how good "signing up for the fight in Iraq" will
look to someone who has nothing else and family that needs help.
