The GOP's Despicable Budget Cuts
Washington, DC - After five years of record-breaking Bush deficits, and mind- boggling giveaways to the White House's corporate friends, Republicans in Congress are finally addressing runaway spending. So, what is their long- awaited answer to the budget crisis they have created: slashing the programs that help the most vulnerable Americans get by every day.
Today, the Washington Post reported that House Republicans will "take steps to cut as much as $50 billion from the fiscal 2006 budget for health care for the poor, food stamps and farm supports." NBC reports that student loan programs will also be cut.
"It is despicable that the Republican Leadership in Congress has decided to pile the costs of their failed fiscal leadership on the backs of our most vulnerable Americans," said Democratic National Committee Press Secretary Josh Earnest. "Taking food and health care away from children, the elderly and the disabled is not a proposal but a slap in the face to the millions of Americans who have already been pushed deeper into poverty by the Republicans' failed policies."
"Republicans in Washington have shown their true colors by putting corporate giveaways and tax breaks ahead of the needs of most Americans. Together we can do better. Americans deserve leadership that puts our government to work helping American families"
