Gephardt on Iraq: "I was wrong"
GEPHARDT: "It was a mistake ... I was wrong."

The Rose Garden compact was a mistake. The War Powers vote was a mistake. Trusting this Administration was a mistake.

How many other Dem pols do? Yeah, Conyers and a few others. But this is the first time one of the 'inner circle' has shown much sign of something happening between the ears. And others could follow. Maybe the damn dam is breaking.

51. you really think so....
you see the entire thing as politics as usual, with bush just a little more successful in exploiting the asteroids/planets/moons etc lining up with jupiter, and them's the breaks? you cannot imagine that the dems know full well that the rightwingers never won 2k election, not by a long shot, but because of their capacity to create 'reality' that doesn't exist (because the mass media are a buncha mediawhores, and eager to help the nazipoos destroy liberal democratic america) and because the dems are hamstrung by a)personal ambition b)fear of physical retribution re anthrax and senator wellstone/carnahan and c) fear for america; if the nazipoos want, they can effectively cause massive bloodshed, completely set aside the 'constitution' and mass murder anyone who they fear...this would burn the bridges to the america the dems know and love, forever, and the dems want to allow the gopigs to come to their senses, and by acting as if everything is normal, it in effect is normal....at least, that's the hope.
I hope you're right about the bush extravaganza, but, believe me, you're wrong, and the cost of putting off restoring law to usa politics will dwarf the cost already....bushinc is a criminal organization, and that isn't saying they play hard, it's that they lie and cheat and commit endless crimes, which the gopig media helps them cover over by focusing the newscasts on stuff that doesn't matter....
had kerry, or any mainstream pol confronted the gopigs, and attacked the gopig media, then there would have been massive support, and out and out violence towards the busheviks....kerry et al never did this not because they feared failing, but because they knew that they would succeed, and something like a revolution would have been started

16. This could be huge
Gephardt is providing cover for Congresspeople who voted to give Bush the authority to invade Iraq. So far, most Democrats have been too cowed to admit their mistake, and any Democrat who wants to run for president has to simultaneously support and oppose the war, like Kerry did.

Security Gap
By Lt. Gen. Daniel W. Christman
Prohibitions on ROTC and recruitment at some colleges are worsening the Army's leadership gap. Democrats can close their own security gap by challenging those bans and embracing the military.

snip

Calls by leading Democrats (and by the Democratic Leadership Council) for an increase of 100,000 troops in the Army, and for termination of the senseless ban on recruiting on some college campuses, are vital to restoring strength to our Army and to its leadership cohort.

(as long as these troops aren't their kids)

snip

Democrats should call for opening the doors to military recruiting at all U.S. colleges and universities. But ROTC programs, in particular, need to be highlighted. A list of universities that continue to ban such programs is a Who's Who of top-tier educational institutions in the United States: Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Rice, Northwestern, Washington and Lee, and Stanford, to name just a few. Each of those universities once hosted an ROTC unit, but expelled it during the mindless attacks on our military in the 1960s and 1970s. A notable exception among the prestigious institutions is Princeton, which offers a thriving and popular ROTC program.

Even today, the "no military on campus" mantra is repeated by those with no agenda but to reject any affiliation with our armed forces. To be sure, the Pentagon's "don't ask, don't tell" policy is most often cited as the rationale for the exclusion. But this is a charade. If that policy were changed tomorrow (and it will not be), other justifications -- an "unjust war," the military's "unfair burden on the poor" -- would conveniently take its place.

45. Agreed
And their latest article goes to show just how out of touch they are. Where are we going to get 100,000 more army troops? They seem to think college students would just love to join up in droves if a few Ivy League schools reinstated the ROTC.

47. Not to mention the fact
Edited on Tue Oct-18-05 05:24 PM by Zodiak Ironfist
that the DLC cannot guarantee that these troops would be used well because we still have Bush in charge, a sad fact that the DLC has done nothing but promote by agreeing with Herr Bushler ever since the prick got to office.

They advocate a strategy that runs counter with the majority of Americans and they have no proposal on how to get these troops when morale is bad, our military is overstretched, and recruitment is low.

This has "bad strategy" written all over it from the get-go. A sure-fire loser on all counts.

But this way, when the REAL Democrats outline a plan to get out of Iraq ASAP, the media can look at this DLC crap and run the headline "Democrats cannot agree on how to get US out of Iraq", and people turn away once again thinking we stand for nothing. See how this works?

(btw...this post is not to disagree to the above poster...just further ranting using rhetorical "you's", fleshing out how bad this tack is for the Democrats if we let th DLC have their way on this one)

48. A damned fine observation
The biggest problem for establishment Democrats on the corporate side is that their base has gotten VERY politically knowledgeable over the last five years. An energized, inter-connected, knowledgeable base is a corrupt status-quo advocate's worst nightmare.

I hope the GOP goes into hibernation, and they can take the DLC with them. They both represent old ideas from a not-so-forgotten time when Americans didn't care about anything but themselves....we can call it the Anti-Jefferson era since Jefferson was the one to warn us about a uneducated, apathetic electorate.

Things are changing...Americans are no longer finding anywhere to bury their heads in the sand. It is sad it had to get to this, but at least we got here.

Edited on Tue Oct-18-05 04:50 PM by Zodiak Ironfist
But I will still never forgive him for his murder/suicide (his words) on Howard Dean in Iowa. He obviously didn't think the war was a mistake then because he simultaneously torpedoed the only viable anti-war candidate while thumbing his nose at more than half of his base.

That 2002 attitide of ignoring the base in favor of keeping the status quo power structures is what really irks me about pink tutu Democrats...it all about them and their jobs; death is nothing in comparison to their precious, cushy jobs.

We were right; we have always been right, and we are the least listened to, then AND now.

But yes, I'll give a small amount of credit where it is due. Let's see how many Democrats with cushy jobs will follow suit.

Not until little Dickie is out there busting his ass daily to end the war will he have begun to atone.

Same goes for you, Kerry, Hillary, and all the rest of the spineless neoliberal warriors who share responsibility with Bush for this war.

53. Well, the clock has started
for the rest of the "spineless neoliberal warriors" (nice, accurate term). We shall see whether they embrace or reject Gephardt's admission. My suspicion is that Kerry and Hillary will eventually join the anti-war side (I have some reason to belive this) because neither of them are true DLC in ideology (being opportunists instead of ideologues). As far as Nelson, Landrieu, Leiberman, Lincoln (all true DLCers), and their ilk, I suspect they will be getting as far away from Gephardt as possible.

We really need to focus on the REAL DLCers and get them out of the party structures. The opportunists will follow suit because, by nature, they are opportunists. Kerry and Hillary are up-front and noticeable because the DLC likes their semi-liberal image..makes them look moderate. The REAL DLCers have a voting record that is comparable only with the other side of the aisle (they support Bush most of the time) . Even Leiberman has five or six senators that are worse than him, and we NEVER talk about these DLCers on DU.

We should.

67. Well said.
Exorcising the DLC influence is what a party spinning its head and vomiting greenly so clearly needs.

You make a subtle point about opportunists and true believers. No question Kerry and Hillary are opportunistic. Their quickness to enlist in the popular moment, be it for war, religious zealotry, or the security state, is second to none if they scent votes. The harm is done in any case, as surely as if by ideologues.

While they could end up opposing the war, one wonders how long they'll wait and at what cost to both nations. One influence could press them: the massive bailouts demanded by their corporate masters won't be possible if more hundreds of billions are tied up in Iraq.

Who fills out your sub-Lieberman list?

73. My argument between DLC ideologues and opportunists
stems from the general idea that we need to cull the Party, but we need to cull it of the minimum number of Democrats in order to preserve cohesiveness and satisfy our need to be a "big tent". (this would also make the most amount of DUers happy, as well, from the arguments I have seen)

In the interest of that, I started a coring system (not trusting the ADA's methodology after reading it) and scored all of our Senators from the last Congress. I learned a lot from this exercise...mainly I learned that many of the Democrats we hear the least from are doing the most damage to the party (among a few other notables). Here they are:

Conrad (ND) 35 - DLC
Feinstein (CA) 35
Carper (DE) 30 - DLC
Leiberman (CT) 30 - DLC
Landrieu (LA) 20 - DLC
Lincoln(ARK) 20 - DLC
Nelson (FL) 20 - DLC
Salazar (CO) 20 - DLC
Pryor (ARK) 15 - DLC
Nelson (NE) 0 - DLC

These are the bottom ten. I have never even heard of Carper, Conrad, Lincoln, Pryor, or Nebraska's Nelson before I did this exercise. It was an eye-opener for me.

108. Good exercise, that one
I'll save this list for further investigation.

One parting thought on culling the party. While I am for being less generous with the life preservers, it's possible that as soon as many of the others see their GOP-lite colleagues disappearing under the surf they'll come round: opportunists learn quickly.

I'm not worried about numbers. The party is quite beyond useless now, having crossed the line between silence and collaboration, and only its reconstitution will redeem it. Career sell-outs must go.

Edited on Tue Oct-18-05 05:34 PM by stlsaxman
and when he appeared in the rose garden with Bush I went ballistic. Called his offices repeatedly and stated my opposition to the war. Got him on the phone once and asked him how he could support this madness. His reply was, if there ARE WMD's in Iraq then we must drive out Saddam. I asked him to look into the work the UN weapons inspectors were doing and they cannot find any... he said he would but he sounded to me like he trusted Bush on the matter instead. I told him that though I appreciate all the work he's done in his career up to this, I could not bring myself to support him in the next election, presidential or congressional if he went with Bush on this. He thanked me for my support in the past and hoped I would I would show the same in the future. I replied the choice is yours, Sir.

Looks like he realized his mistake. Too bad it's so late it's useless. Maybe he's giving cover for other Dems, i don't know. I hope he's not running for president again. I'll give him no support. Though I like to think his change of heart is sincere.

56. And that is lame how? There are a lot of dead bodies over this.
Would you agree that is is far less divisive and flame-ish to simply state that you disagree?

People died because of this....our government has stripped us of our general welfare because of this, and we are at the "I'm sorry" stage, now. People are still dying and the general welfare is still being robbed, so some of the urgency and venom you see here might be because people are passionate about this issue and are seeing very little movement to stop this war.

Gephardt says "sorry"....great. Does anyone disagree that it is a good thing? No...but it is not enough, and that is all that matters to many here who are willing to hold ANYONES feet to the fire to stop this war.

I do not blame them nor refer to their postings as "lame".

Well, now you have one.

The replies to this thread have been extremely immature and I will use the word "lame" because that is the kind of response they deserve. Gephardt apologizes and in response he gets called a jackass, asshole, etc.

If you're not going to offer even a small amount of forgiveness for an apology then don't demand the damn apology in the first place.

64. If I recall the argument as I have seen it here
I believe the call was for Democrats to START by apologizing. One Democrat who is not in power any more has started apologizing. I don't belive many are willing to drop the issue at this point.

I do not call that immature. I call that holding people accountable...people whose signature has killed. People who did not do their homework over the most important issue that they have ever or will ever face. An apology is a far cry from atoning for this ain, but it is a start.

Gore redeemed himself in many eyes on DU by his actions after splitting with the DLC. Gephardt can do the same, but it takes more than an apology. The precedent is set and the ball is in his court.

The choice of words of others I may not support, but I am not willing to ridicule another for their choice of words in this matter.

Last word is yours.

But a good majority of the people in this topic have not shown even the slightest bit of forgiveness to Gephardt for his apology. In fact, they've called him just about every nasty name they could think of which is just childish.

What position is Gephardt in to do anything more than apologize? He could demand that troops be pulled out.

Oh, wait! He'll just be called an opportunist like John Edwards was numerous times when his opinion shifted about the war.

It's bullshit. There just is no pleasing some of the individuals on this forum.

99. Hey it's better than still supporting the war...
I understand the frustration over his previous actions and his cowardly and craven support for the war but people have to reaalize thta politicians rarely apologize for anything. Thhehy have amazingly huge egos and admitting a mistake deserves a little bit of credit.

Gep's time in politics (atleast electoral politics ) is finished. He's unlikely to run for office again and certainly not president after his disasterous showing in IA...So either way, what he says now really doesn't hold much weight.

Someone wakes up and smells the coffee, will wonders never cease?...so now why did it take this long, when we knew all along it was a mistake...but
I still give kudos to Gephardt for finally having the *'s to admit it..now all those ones who are willing to admit they made a mistake, need to figure out how to undo the mess, that THEY helped get us into..

104. How could we have known it to be a mistake from day one, while...
...career politicians seemingly had no clue?

Bullshit, Gephardt. You knew it was a lie, but you saw it as a political oppurtunity. You didn't know the war was going to end up being so unpopular, and you miscalculated.

That being said, I'm glad he admits it was a mistake. Better late than never.
