ONLY thing to do: make confirmation about Roe and other "divisive" issues. |

Republicans are like the dog that finally catches the car w/Alito nomination. They don't know what to do with it.
For years, republicans have had it both ways: they tell the movement conservatives that they are fighting to ban abortion, while the supreme court conveniently prevents them from passing a law against it. They got both the issue and didn't earn the enmity of the majority for banning abortions.
As Bush achieved the presidency, his unwillingness to expressly assert a willingness to appoint anti abortion supreme court nominees showed a new reality: both he and his backers realized that an anti abortion position was unpopular and a lightening rod. So he switched to code.
Now the republicans are here, and they would like to both vote for Alito (as the coin to the conservatives) without even allowing conservative social issues to be part of the debate, so that when Alito votes to overturn Roe,they can pretend surprise, that they had nothing to do with overturning Roe. Same with the rest of the con constitutional agenda.
The only thing to do is make the debate about Roe v. Wade, gay rights, federalism, the whole federalist society/fundie christian/anti government shebang. Make republican senators defend those stands, so that when Alito votes, the dems can say "This is what Hatch wanted. This is what DeWine wanted. This is what Hutchinson wanted. This was their vision for the future."
We can't let republicans make it about and up or down vote. That's meaningless. There's got to be a reason why the filibuster is wrong, why Alito is right, and the republicans have got to be stating whether they want Roe et al or not. Put them on the record, and win or lose this battle, Dems win for a generation or two at the ballot box.

1. Resistance need not be "divisive." |
|
The fight doesn't need to be fought with neo-fascist terms which give "special rights" to "special interest groups."
Alito represents a threat to the freedoms of every "rugged individual" in America. Alito represents the threat of Big Court intrusion into every aspect of American's lives. Do Americans want Big Court regulating their marriages? Do Americans want Big Court keeping them out of the Halls of Justice? Do Americans want Big Court striking down laws passed by their elected Representatives? Do Americans want Big Court giving all Government power exclusively to the President and Big Court? Do Americans want Big Court to leave them powerless in face of Big Money?
The list goes on; but this is not a fight simply about Roe and gays. This is a fight for FREEDOM!!!
Why do "conservatives" HATE OUR FREEDOM?
