News Services Refuse to Alter transcript for White House. |
|
From snip> As documented by yesterday, the White House asked both Congressional Quarterly and Federal News Service to of a recent press briefing. In response to a question from NBC News' David Gregory about the leak case, White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan clearly responded, "That's accurate." But according to the White House transcript, McClellan said, "I don't think that's accurate." "They asked me to take a look at it about a week ago," said FNS news director Kirk Hanneman. "We took a look at it because they did have a problem with it and in the end, we had what we originally had and we are sticking by that because we believe it is correct." CQ's editor said about the incident, "Their comment is a little bit incongruous, it doesn't jive with what we have." <Watch the clip of McClellan and decide for yourself.>

3. So, who's putting the pressure on Scotty? |
|
I doubt the WH would have gone to the trouble to ask for a change in a transcript just because Scotty was whining about it. Hmmm....

9. Sorry to tell you, but I think Scotty's right about this one |
|
He's responding to the sub-part of Gregory's question, which portrays Plame as a "covert officer of the Central Intelligence Agency" according to Fitz. He begins shaking his head "No" as soon as he hears "covert officer" and while only "that's accurate" is audible, he's clearly disagreeing with the premise, and there's a kind of glutteral sound right before "that's" which leads me to believe that he was, in fact, saying "I don't think that's accurate."
We can get them on real stuff. This is bullshit.

10. We have lots to get them on. Still the transcript should be what is |
|
heard by most who listen to the tape - without any attempt to interpret what the speaker means. Transcripts I see posted on DemocracyNow and elsewhere use "..." and "(inaudible)" to cue the reader that something may have been said but that the words weren't clear enough to the transcriber. The WH can issue a clarification about what Scotty meant any time they like.

You've actually changed my mind on this.
At the very least, people shouldn't be expecting to go to the video and see Scott say, unambiguously "That's accurate." That does not happen. At the same time, you're absolutely correct that only the heard portion should appear on an actual transcript.
Thanks.
