My letter to the editor: both versions.
Here's my original version to the Battle Creek Enquirer:

"I must admit that I laughed out loud when I read Rick Wertz's letter to the editor today ("Leftists deep into twisted realities," November 14, 2005). He exhibits in his letter several logical fallacies, and interestingly enough, he accuses Leftists of those same fallacies.

First of all, the "American Left" (usually known as the Democratic Party) is comprised of many different groups and coalitions. I know liberals, progessives (there's a difference), socialists, anarchists, moderates, and free market moderates--and I met all of these through the Democratic Party. I know it is popular to use a reduction argument (if they associate together, they're all the same, and they're all bad), but it is just as inaccurate to apply to the Democratic Party as to the Republican Party. The differences are strong and evident as soon as anyone takes a good look at the American Left.

I am a liberal. I believe heartily in our Constitution, especially as the Framers wrote it--to be a living document that the people interpret. I believe in a government big enough to protect the weak in our society and the nation from our enemies. I believe that taxes are my dues for membership in this amazing country, and that it is partly my responsibility as a voter and member of our society to make sure that those taxes are well-spent and not just flung around to huge multi-national corporations and into the pockets of the ultra-rich.

Mr. Wertz brings up the War in Iraq and again repeats the lie that Saddam Hussein was aiding terrorists. There was no evidence of that, but there is plenty of evidence that our allies Saudi Arabia and Syria as well as many other nations we do business with do, sometimes with the money we pay them to use their land and air for military manuvers.

Am I glad that Saddam is out of power? Yes. Should we have forced him out sooner, rather than sell him the chemical and biological weapons he later used on the Iranians in war and his own people in peacetime? Yes. Should we have considered him an ally even knowing how evil he was back in the early 1980's when Ronald Reagan was president? Never. We knew back then who and what he was, and we made money off of him. Recently, he was contained (always the goal for the Soviet Union) and rather well at that. For some reason, that was not enough for the Neoconservatives now in power.

Our world teems with worse enemies, and now we've added to that number by using napalm in Iraq and committing horrible atrocities against the Iraqi people, giving rise to a new generation who hates us enough to kill. Osama bin Laden, whose family has strong ties to President Bush's family, is still on the loose, and Al Qaeda is stronger than ever with our ham-handed actions giving them more recruits every day. Only one party has been in power nationally during this time.

As for Hurricane Katrina, there is plenty of blame to go around. FEMA promised that they would come in on the tail of the storm and then waited for days. People died waiting for that help. National Guardsmen sent in afterwards said that it looked like Iraq. That is not what our government is in place for. If we cannot protect the least of these within our own borders, why are we sending our young men and women off to die in other nations? If we cannot make sure that we are prepared for the breakdown of society in the face of horrible conditions after a hurricane, why are we sending our young men and women--the future of this great nation--off to deal with the breakdown of society in another country that we caused?

Mr. Wertz says that liberals use fear to control people. His party is the one in power, the one that has created the Department of Homeland Security, the one that has raised the terror threat levels constantly whenever their opinion polls have gone low (as several reporters have started to trace), and it is the President from his party who repeats the mantra of terror and 9/11 in every speech he makes.

As for turning lying into an art form, as he alleges, Tom Delay and Bill Frist are not in our party or anywhere near our politics. Both have lied repeatedly about financial dealings that are at least shady and at worst illegal. We are not the party in power that has accused men like John Kerry, John McCain, and Max Cleland who actually served our nation honorably, even to the point of being wounded, of all sorts things, none of which were true but enough to help them lose their campaigns. Karl Rove is also not ours.

I have always enjoyed debates, and I don't know anyone of the American Left who does not. We are not all socialists or communists, even though we are often painted with that broad red brush. Remember: tyranny does not always come from the Left but most often comes from the Right and often cloaks itself with seeming logic and grand nationalism. If we learned nothing else from WWII, let it be that."

Apparently, that's too long or something. *blush* What can I say, I was on a roll. Anyway, they asked me to cut it for publication, so here's the second version:

"I must admit that I laughed out loud when I read Rick Wertz's letter ("Leftists deep into twisted realities," November 14, 2005).

I am a liberal and a proud member of the Democratic Party. I believe heartily in our Constitution and the Bill of Rights. I believe in a government big enough to protect the weak in our society and the nation from our enemies but small enough to stay out of personal choices. I believe that taxes are my dues for membership in this amazing country and well worth the cost.

Our world teems with worse enemies than Saddam Hussein was, and now we've added to that number by using napalm in Iraq, as recently admitted by the Pentagon, and committing horrible atrocities. Osama bin Laden is still on the loose, and Al Qaeda is stronger than ever. One national party has been in power during this time, and it wasn't the liberals.

Mr. Wertz says that liberals use fear to control people. His party is the one that has raised the terror threat levels constantly whenever their polls have gone low. It is the President from his own party who repeats the mantra of terror and 9/11 in every speech he makes, just in case we all forgot about them.

As for turning lying into an art form, Tom Delay and Bill Frist are not in our party or anywhere near our politics. Karl Rove and Scooter Libby are also not ours. Their lies have been shady at best and illegal at worst.

Remember: tyranny does not always come from the Left but most often comes from the Right and often cloaks itself with seeming logic, fears for security, and grand nationalism. If we learned nothing else from WWII, let it be that."

Any thoughts? I might still be able to change it.

5. It's not too choppy?
That was my main concern. Does it flow enough and make sense?

I almost put something in there about the Republicans in our State House trying to make every woman get a scrip for EC but decided to stick to answering that wacko's letter.

11. Seriously?
Michael Savage is a freakin' idiot, and Limbaugh's a crazy narc-seeker.

I once had a letter published when we lived in Cleveland and got two phone calls at home from it. Thank goodness they were nice people and all, but it was a bit freaky. We have an unlisted number now, but my hubby's a doctor in town and might get some blowback. Of course, he's a liberal too, so he'd be fine with it.

4. I was going to but ran into length again.
I wish they'd just give me half a page for an opinion piece. Then, I could really let them have it! ;)

Actually, I should ask. There's no harm in asking, is there?

10. I think the letter in it's current
form is great - if it's a length thing, then perhaps you can save other ideas for another letter. And as tell my 4 yr old, no, there is never any harm in asking, you just may not like the response!

7. Thanks!
Are you sure it's not too choppy? It read that way to me, but I couldn't think of how to fix that and still make the points I needed to.

You should have read the original letter. That guy is a Freeper, no doubt.

6. Excellent thoughts
but may I suggest even more brevity. Limit your response to five sentences. You must not only please the guy who has to squeeze your letter on to his editorial page but you have to grab the readers attention fast and walk him through your letter to its climactic end - boom! Make an assumption that the reader might already know some of the factual stuff you wrote about. As President Bartlett would say, how dare we show off our intelligence.

Just a few thoughts I'll throw out

Wertz says liberals use fear. His letter is proof republicans use lies to control people. If it weren't for bush's lies there'd be no basis for wertz ltr. The only thing he should fear is a liberal like me getting a letter to the editor published full of the truth. Its the "wertz" case scenario for those feeding on a steady stream of lies and right now those being fed are having a tad touch of heartburn.

I'm just rambling, use or toss anything you want. I think I wax philosophical and write pretty good, my wife says I'm full of crap and have access to a keyboard. God, I love her. Good Luck.

9. Ooh, that's really good!
My main concern is that we have many conservatives in the area, and it's not that big of a town. I don't want to offend, so I have to stick to stuff that's nicer.

Also, I can't assume they know, as the paper sure as hell isn't telling most of what's going on very well (despite the constant letters saying they're a liberal rag--those people should read "The Nation" and see what a liberal paper really looks like).

I'll see what I can do--I think I have some time to change and edit as needed.

12. Best of luck to you but please consider
do you think Mr Wertz considered whether he was offending you when he took pen to paper? It's a really sad day in America when one is offended by the truth. Go get em!!!

16. I remember a story about a small town
and in a small neighborhood was a small voting precinct, about 30 people, and every election there was only one vote for the democratic candidate coming from that precinct. Everyone in the neighborhood knew who the democrat was so they were quite surprised that after the democrat had died the next election rolled around and there it was, one vote for the democratic candidate. Maybe there are more of you in town then you know. Maybe you all are too polite to be inconsiderate to the wertz' of the world. Maybe its time he had his panties ruffled. Let me guess, you are a law abiding, tax paying productive citizen in your community. I spent 24 years in uniform protecting your constitutional liberties; I'm especially fond of the first amendment.

19. Thank you.
Thank you for your service and many sacrifices (and your family's sacrifices as well). My dad's family was almost all Navy, and I have had cousins and a step-brother proudly serve. I fly the flag at our home in honor of all the sacrifices so many have made to keep this a wonderful country.

I probably am being too polite, but I worry a bit for my hubby (a Dem doctor) and my knitting teaching biz (I lost a student once because of my sig line--Knitters Against Bush). We're still new enough in town that it could cause real problems if we're too out there. On the other hand, I've never been known for keeping my mouth shut. ;)

I actually had someone tell me that they didn't think I should've had my last letter printed (a rant against some letters bashing Katrina victims), but most of the responses, even to my husband, were positive.

You're right that there are more Dems than we know of. The city of Battle Creek went Kerry, but the country as a whole went Bush with no voting fraud that anyone was able to catch. It's a fairly conservative area overall.

17. Good letter, but
I know of no use of napalm in Iraq. White phosphorus is an entirely different substance.

I had read that it was napalm or a close cousin to it. Oh heck, I'd better contact the paper to change it and make it right.

23. The substance at issue is white phosphorous.
It burns in contact with oxygen, and typically is used to make white smoke, rather than as a weapon. The fragments, however, burn most anything it comes into contact with, including human tissue. Napalm is gelled gasoline ignited with high explosive. It sends out sheets of red flame as the gas explodes and coats what it comes into contact with.

21. great letter
You hit on a lot of great facts. I would have a hard time cutting it down. If they really liked it, they would not have a problem with it's length. I have seen some very lengthy letters to the editor in my newspaper....they were always the ones that were well written and very factual.

25. They have a very small section for letters to the editor.
I thought of asking for a larger space but decided against it. It's not like they're not reporting things (although without some important bits), and they're under enough attack locally for all the liberal letters and views they print anyway. I doubt they'd give me more space.
