Question about Col. Bubp's rank and service for all you vets.
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2005/11/19/9737/0749

This is apparently from his campaign website:
"Military Service :
1978 - Commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps

1978-Present - Continues to serve in United States Marine Corps Reserve as a Colonel of Marines

1997-Present - Serves on the staff at the National Defense University, Washington, D.C. as Team Leader for the Reserve Component National Security Course

2003 - Graduate of Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island

2003 - Served on the J-3 Staff at United States Central Command, Tampa, Florida for General Tommy Franks in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom"

How does one go from 2nd Lt. to Colonel in one year? Is that normal? Or is he just skipping over what year he was promoted to Colonel and can't explain it in English very well?

Also noted on Kos:
"Nearly thirty years in the Marines, and Col. Bubp missed every single military engagement? Southeast Asia? Beirut? Grenada? Panama? Gulf War? The Balkans? Somolia? He even missed embassy service in Paris!"
What's with this guy? Did he manage even a good conduct medal that he'd like to mention? You have to figure that if he had even been in a war, even in the rear, let alone managed to get a medal in combat he would shout about it on his website.

2. the part that is fishy to me is
the jump from 0-1 to 0-6 and no service with a combat unit... even as a reservist...

Gratned Ike did not punch his combat card but that was another time... you'd think that in 91 he would have found himself in the sand box...

6. Rumsfeld
A Captain (O-6) Naval reserve. Never in combat. It is not unusual.

7. Actually Rummy left as an 0-5
but he did not go straight from 0-1 to 0-5, he hit every other command level, this boy seemed to have gone from 0-1 to 0-6 no stoping in beteeen, as if he bought his command as it was done in ages past.

13. I counted the
'O' grades on my fingers and likely goofed. I am quite sure his Bio on Google says he is a Captain. Captain is O-6. Commander is O-5.

Yes made Captain in 1989.

16. hmm the Navy Times story said he left as an 0-5
and that was very recent, as of three years ago... did the Navy Times goof?

22. His DOD Bio
Gives his active duty as three years. Nobody makes full commander (O-5) in only three years with possible exception of war (He was never in a war). In the Naval reserve the bio states he was promoted to Captain (O-6) in 1989.

The Navy Times is not an official government newspaper as far as I know. I once subscribed to it and read it for many years.

I believe the Marine in question advanced in his military rank in the normal fashion; time and performance as did Rumsfeld.

28. Donald Rumsfeld

We are way off topic here. Stealing a thread.

I originally intended to show that one can progress to O-6 over a period of time spent in military reserves. I used Misfield as an example. His military career is typically unremarkable.

Google Rumsfeld DOD Biography. There is very little concerning his military service.

4. It smells like a "padded" resume. Check his military decorations!
Edited on Sat Nov-19-05 02:13 PM by IndianaGreen
The man may not even have the record that he claims.

I find it amazing that someone can make it to the rank of Colonel without ever serving in a war zone.

Something is fishy here, perhaps he is a Colonel like Colonel Sanders was.

On edit:

I read the dailykos comments and one of them had a link to his website. Here are his military decorations in 30-odd years of service:

Personal Military Awards and Decorations :

Joint Service Commendation Medal
Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal
Army Commendation Medal

19. I'm sure he has the REMF Ribbon with 2 oak leaf clusters
:spank:

Even if you are assigned to some stateside gig, you can get to a combat zone if you ask for it.

Or is he "more valuable supporting the troops from over here" like all the other chickenhawks say? :eyes:

5. Air Force Vet here...
It wouldn't be unusual for someone like me to miss out on all those military actions. But it would be very unusual for someone in the Marines. They are always first in and last out. The only reason I can see would be the only child thing...if he is an only child, there is a chance that the Marines would not send him into combat.

Just a guess.

8. It's badly written. It implies he was a colonel all that time.
He wouldn't have been.

This guy served in the reserves during a period when they didn't get called up for duty overseas. By the time THIS war rolled around, he was already well past age for combat for a Marine.

This character is a BUSHIE rightwing politician, an elected official, I believe.

Lately, the pukes have gone to using politicians who are in the guard or the reserves to use their status as military to give the illusion we are hearing from regular military instead of a plant.

10. This is also interesting...
from the comments on the Kos thread:
"He is associated with the infamous National Defense University (NDU). Not to take away from the overall subject in this fine diary, but to point something out.

NDU is, and I know this from personal experience, a repository for GOP and sorted Right-Wing hacks (both straight political and military). It is by far the most right wing pseudo hack outfit, pretending to be an educational institution anywhere 'within' our federal government.

NDU is co-located on Fort McNair in Washington, DC, former home of that great school for South and Central American dictators, the School of the Americans. It is also home to some of the largest, fancy senior military officer quarters I have seen in over 30 years.

The NDU was chartered by Bush I, and, inside, is sort of shrine to him. You will also notice very little, if any, mention of Clinton or any other Democrat, anywhere in the place.

TOday, the school has a side mission of producing white paper level dribble in support of the GOP/Bush War Council. Again, you will find many guys like this Marine COL on staff. To say this guy is an educator is like saying Dick Butkus started in the ballet and now is an alto tenor in Rome.

Why this place is even supported by federal money should outrage everyone, not just Democrats. IT is nothing more than an in-govt GOP-Right Wing Military Think Tank. It should be closed and, if up to me, burned down and covered with salt.

Someone should take a close, very close look at this COL Bubp and his connection to NDU.

20. My two-cents
and thanks Cassandra for the PM. Bubp's resume is standard fare for a Reserve Officer. It doesn't take much more than a college degree; maintaining physical fitness standards; staying out of trouble; writing kraftily worded fitness reports for yourself and kissing ass in an appropriate manner to make Reserve O-6. With what little I know of him he sounds like what is affectionately known as a Staff Puke. Spending time behind a desk or in a classroom contemplating the fate of the universe and amazing junior officers with his vast knowledge and wisdom. His most arduous duty seems to be that of a "staff" member of Tommy Franks in War Torn Tampa Bay. "Staff" guys don't get their hands dirty.

Visualize him as the John Laroquette chararacter from Stripes.

What really pisses me off about the Bubpster is he decided to leave his Officer and Gentleman persona at the O-Club, relieved himself of his Marine Corps Core Values and viciously attacked a genuine and highly decorated war hero while hiding behind the skirt of a very evil woman and all for political purposes. Real Marines don't do that. If the bubpster had an issue with Colonel Murtha then he should have gone to the Colonel and looked him in the eye and worked as a team to arrive at a solution. I truly believe the bubpster lacks the Marine Corp Esprit d'corps to do that and I say that based on his actions. Real Marines don't hide behind lady's skirts, cowards do.

31. Thanks for your input BOSSHOG!
I knew there was something insidious about "Bubpkus". It's at the core of these "alleged" values people. They claim values and hardly ever have them. My brother was a Marine too and it just seemed so egregious for one fellow Marine to call another one a coward. Now we know that Danny "Bubpkus" doesn't have the courage to say it to Murtha's face. No, he sends a 3rd party to insult Murtha. Seems like Danny must really feel inferior to Murtha and wouldn't have the real Marine guts to talk to Murtha privately. He's just a gutless, clueless robot for the right.

21. It is poorly written. He clearly had to rise through the ranks.
Doesn't say if he was ever on active duty. If he has been a reservist his entire career it is not unrealistic that he was not deployed.

Says he attended the War College in 03, I suspect he made COL around that time.

Commissioned the same year he graduated from college in 1978.
Let's see...what was going on then?
I don't think we were fighting a war anywhere.
He probably served 4 or 5 years active duty in peacetime and has been in the reserves ever since.

He's still a jerk.

I understand that the people at HQ are necessary, but it's a little ridiculous for someone who's always worked far, FAR behind the lines to act like his service is EXACTLY equivalent to the troops actually risking their lives.
