David Brooks apologizes for calling Murtha non-serious

at about the 7:45 point in the above audio link, David Brooks engages in his standard operating procedure. When discussing the debate about troop withdrawal, Bobo says all "serious" people reject Murtha's proposal.

Really nothing at all unusual for Bobo, but when he's on PBS it's an unusual situation because Mark Shields is there, and Shields calls him on it.

Bobo ends up apologizing, saying that as he was saying it, a little voice in his head said to him, "you don't really believe that..." and so he says, no he didn't mean to say that, sorry.

The apology is utterly fake, because Brooks always knows he doesn't really believe that, but it never stops him. His job in fact is to say things he doesn't really believe, but which his bosses order him to say, for propaganda purposes.

6. Shields has had a rough time the past two weeks.

Last week he and Lehrer (both US Marine vets) had to listen to little Richie Rich Lowry from the National Review hold forth on Murtha. You could see Shields going into a slow burn and Lehrer having a hard time keeping his poker face.

I was sitting there thinking, "Please, Mark... you MUST hit him. You must." I don't know how Shields kept from blasting Lowry's smug little chickenhawk face all over the set; you could tell he wanted to.

...Brooks trotted out this week's ever-popular talking point about only three Democrats voting for 'Murtha's Proposal'. Of course, he was quickly corrected.

I've seen this several times this past week, Repubs trying to characterize Hunter's proposal for 'immediate withdrawal of all troops' as being Murtha's idea. And every time someone does it, they get corrected -- thus bringing more attention to the fact that they're trying to promote a misrepresentation of what actually happened.

These people seem to be getting more stupid every day -- if that's possible.
