How a heart-throb became the voice of liberal America
"Good night and Good Luck" is still not playing in my town ...sigh ...we all need a hero ...

Sunday November 27, 2005
The Observer

George Clooney was adamant about one thing last week: he was not attacking the President in his gripping new film about the Middle East - he was slamming the entire geopolitical system.

'It is not an attack on the Bush administration, but it is an attack on the system that has been in place for 60 or 70 years - oil always being at the centre of it,' the actor told an interviewer.

The debonair Clooney, the playboy actor once best known for keeping a pet pig and being the consummate ladies' man, has clearly taken on an unlikely role: the new King of Liberal Hollywood.

Unseating old-time liberal 'actor-vists' such as Warren Beatty, Tim Robbins and director Rob Reiner, Clooney has now emerged as the leading political voice in Hollywood, winning plaudits from liberals and stinging attacks from conservatives.

1. Don't feel bad it's not here either
I've been looking but nothing yet.

I'm thinking I might have to wait till video, like I did with Moore's F 9/11

Clooney also has that new Movie out about the ME Oil.

He's got to be on someone's watch list at this point. He's put himself out there, and I appreciate him for doing it.

29. Yes, definitely! I'm very proud of John Cusack. He's most eloquent,
and from his writings - VERY observant and well-informed.

I love George Clooney! Just LOVE him.

I hope you get a chance to see or maybe rent "Good Night and Good Luck." It's worth it. Moves along really nicely. And the connective tissue of the jazz singer and her jazz club combo is JUST GREAT!!! One thing that I found striking was the smoking. EVERYBODY smoked in the movie. Edward R. Murrow eventually died of cancer - lung cancer I believe. Not surprising. I forgot how smokey big newsrooms used to be.

EVERYBODY'S really good in that movie. I'm afraid it'll get swept over by other films but it's a GREAT one, and should absolutely get a best picture nomination, plus best actor for David Strathairn, maybe also supporting actor nods for Robert Downey Junior and Frank Langella, and the guy who played Don Hollenbeck. Same for Clooney who could get nominated for best director also.

It's a GREAT film. I'd see it again in a heartbeat. AND the news in this story that Clooney's gonna remake "Network" - man - ECSTACY!!! One of my alltime favorite movies (just dug out the DVD to enjoy again) and in Clooney's hands, its integrity will undoubtedly be maintained - or even heightened.

Also - did you see the note about Sean Penn at the end of this story - in short list of prominent Hollywood liberals? VERY brief, but REALLY made him look good - since it mentioned only his personal heroism during Hurricane Katrina. Yes, ms. coulter, mr. oreilly, mr. limbaugh, mr. name-rhymes-with-vanity, georgie-poo and your cake-eating buddy john mccain, and your shitty, selfish imperious parents, and your puppetmaster dick go-fuck-yourself, and your pals turdblossom and saint contradicta of the holy ferragamos and "heckuva job" brownie? WHERE WERE YOU when Sean Penn was out there, physically, in his ratty jeans and tshirt - in that little motorboat with a couple of other rescuers - actually pulling people - FORTY PEOPLE - out of the drink? HMM??? How 'bout it???? WHERE WERE YOU?????? Hope that cake was nice...

4. Does anyone have info over...
Clooney's scuffle with O'Reilly?

Apparently, Falafelhead was accusing Clooney of fraud in a telethon and attacked him, Clooney was mature and responded without venom. That's about as much as I know.

26. Didja catch him on The Daily Show several weeks ago?
Jon was amusingly honest in admitting his jealousy. It's just not fair that one guy can be so smart, so gorgeous, so talented, so witty...and right about his politics.

I can't remember exactly, but he said that liberals don't have to put "compassionate" in fron of our name to show that we give a shit about people.

15. My favorite GCism was his response to Ann Coulter questioning his manhood
Edited on Sun Nov-27-05 01:11 AM by melody
Something to the effect that he would never question hers.

It was perfect.

He's still way too pretty for my tastes, but his liberal heart makes him a hottie from the start. (speaking of George, of course, not mAnn)

And his aunt could really belt out a tune.

9. When they were young, back when I loved him on Facts of Life:)
I thought that George Clooney looked just like JFK Jr.
Of course, I was in love with both of them...

I don't have JFK Jr. any more, but I'm so in awe of what Clooney has done...I just saw Good Night and Good Luck, SEE IT!! The guy who plays Murrow is incredible...and now counting down the days to Syriana...COMES OUT 12/9!!

CLooney says what he means and doesnt pull any punches...his movies reflect that...my admiration for him has grown so much, and the more I hear him speak, the more respect I have for him...

27. I see the resemblance too. Also, I heard that Murrow appeared in clips
in the movie. I haven't seen the movie yet--but were all the appearances of Murrow actually clips of the real (late) journalist?

19. I have this quote on my emails ...

"Authority unquestioned
is always, always corrupt."
---George Clooney, at Columbia's
Graduate School of Journalism,
October 14, 2005

Got it from a recent People mag interview he gave about the "Good Bye" movie.

20. I wish he'd run for governor of Kentucky!
He's born and raised here and his dad nearly pulled off victory in a very conservative district in the state.

22. The media invent conflicts...
...such as the nonexistent war between Jennifer anniston and Angelina Jolie. They'd love to paint Clooney's movie as an attack on a single US president.

I know it's unlikely, but he's got it all. I think he'd make a great president, and I'd get behind him big time.

34. Wonderful movie--a must see!
If it has a single flaw, it's that it portrays the complicity of the media too accurately. People may be tempted to see the parallels to today, and not realize that today is MUCH worse. But I dunno... if it at least gets those people considering the issues, then the good most likely outweighs any potential bad.

But you're right. Clooney is a hero. A sexy hero.

Personally, I'm looking for Clooney to play the title role in "The Clark Story" in a few years. ;)
