Investigation: Armstrong Williams
Disposition: The GAO said the Education Department's contract with Williams violated the law barring publicity or propaganda that did not disclose that the government had sponsored it and taxpayer funds were used.
Investigators at the Education Department have contacted the U.S. attorney's office regarding the Bush administration's hiring of commentator Armstrong Williams to promote its agenda. The action was disclosed by Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-New Jersey, who has pressed for a criminal fraud investigation focused on questions about whether Williams actually performed the work cited in his monthly reports to the Education Department. The Government Accountability Office has concluded that the Education Department engaged in illegal ''covert propaganda'' by hiring Williams to promote the No Child Left Behind Act without requiring him to disclose that he was being paid.
The attorney's office has a range of potential remedies, from suing to recover the money to possible criminal charges, said Dan Katz, chief counsel for Lautenberg.

21. FL - Abramoff is screwed...so is the HOUSE GOP
WASHINGTON, Dec. 1 - With a federal corruption case intensifying, prosecutors investigating Jack Abramoff, the Republican lobbyist, are examining whether he brokered lucrative jobs for Congressional aides at powerful lobbying firms in exchange for legislative favors, people involved in the case have said.

The attention paid to how the aides obtained jobs occurs as Mr. Abramoff is under mounting pressure to cooperate with prosecutors as they consider a case against lawmakers. Participants in the case, who insisted on anonymity because the investigation is secret, said he could try to reach a deal in the next six weeks.

<snip>

Prosecutors are trying to establish that "it's not just a ticket to a ballgame, it's major jobs" that exchanged hands, the participant in the case said. Also under examination are payments to lobbyists and lawmakers' wives, including Mr. Rudy's wife, Lisa Rudy, whose firm, Liberty Consulting, worked in consultation with Mr. Abramoff, people involved in case said.

<snip>

At least six members of Congress are in the scope of the inquiry, with an additional 12 or so former aides being examined to determine whether they gave Mr. Abramoff legislative help in exchange for campaign donations, lavish trips and gifts.

22. FL - Abramoff using Tom Delay to fund Israeli 'Anti-Intifada Militia
So Abramoff dangled a carrot in front of his clients, advising them to donate to his philanthropic venture. Why not, it was for a good cause. Plus, he boasted, it would buy them access to Rep. Tom DeLay. It may indeed have bought them access, but what Abramoff's customers didn't realize was that a large portion of their money would never be spent on gearing up inner city kids to shoot some b-ball -- rather, their dollars were shipped overseas to help arm Israeli settlers in the occupied territories.

<snip>

More than $140,000 of the foundation's funds, reports Newsweek, was used to purchase sniper scopes, night-vision binoculars, camouflage suits, thermal imagers and other material which Abramoff's foundation called "security" equipment.

Newsweek also reports "these payments are part of a larger investigation to determine if Abramoff defrauded his Indian tribe clients." Not surprisingly Abramoff's ex-clients are fuming.

Grunseth nude swimming with teenage girls scandal dates from 1990. It was a huge moment in MN politics in a very dramatic election year, but not clear how it plays into current GOP culture of corruption. Child pornography is not an entirely accurate handle. Grunseth was a moral majority type, and yet it was revealed that in 1981 he inappropriately went skinny dipping with teenage girls. His wife subsequently laid into him for having an affair, and he was toast. With Grunseth gone, moderate Republican Arne Carlson defeated DFL incumbent Rudy Perpich, and Wellstone beat Rudy Boschwitz.

36. DC - Abramoff, lobbyists linked to Homeland Security contract
Abramoff, lobbyists linked to troubled multibillion-dollar Homeland Security contract

The Transportation Security Administration awarded a $1 billion contract to Unisys to devise a cutting-edge computer network linking hundreds of airports to the TSA’s state-of-the-art security centers. The contract was ideal, they argued, because if the company failed to meet its goals, Unisys would pay money back to the agency.

It didn’t turn out that way. In October, the Washington Post revealed the Pennsylvania-based information services company had overcharged the government for a whopping 117,000 hours -- billing $131 an hour for employees who were paid less than half that amount. Officials now see the project costing taxpayers as much as $3 billion.

Unisys’ prime lobbyists? A team from the Greenberg Traurig lawfirm led by Neil Volz, former chief of staff to Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH) --which included indicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

63. Bush on the Constitution: 'It's just a goddamned piece of paper'
Bush on the Constitution: 'It's just a goddamned piece of paper'
By DOUG THOMPSON
Dec 9, 2005, 07:53

Last month, Republican Congressional leaders filed into the Oval Office to meet with President George W. Bush and talk about renewing the controversial USA Patriot Act.

Several provisions of the act, passed in the shell shocked period immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, caused enough anger that liberal groups like the American Civil Liberties Union had joined forces with prominent conservatives like Phyllis Schlafly and Bob Barr to oppose renewal.

GOP leaders told Bush that his hardcore push to renew the more onerous provisions of the act could further alienate conservatives still mad at the President from his botched attempt to nominate White House Counsel Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court.

“I don’t give a goddamn,” Bush retorted. “I’m the President and the Commander-in-Chief. Do it my way.”

“Mr. President,” one aide in the meeting said. “There is a valid case that the provisions in this law undermine the Constitution.”

“Stop throwing the Constitution in my face,” Bush screamed back. “It’s just a goddamned piece of paper!”

Don't forget that the rightful Governor of Alabama was a Dem who was cheated out of office by election fraud.

10. Here's one:
http://www.independent-media.tv/item.cfm?fmedia_id=8705&fcategory_desc=Under%20Reported
Excerpt:

In the Alabama 2002 general election, machines made by Election Systems and Software (ES&S) flipped the governor’s race. Six thousand three hundred Baldwin County electronic votes mysteriously disappeared after the polls had closed and everyone had gone home. Democrat Don Siegelman’s victory was handed to Republican Bob Riley, and the recount Siegelman requested was denied. Three months after the election, the vendor shrugged. °Something happened. I don't have enough intelligence to say exactly what,° said Mark Kelley of ES&S.

11. Baldwin county is overwhelmingly Republican as it is.
Proving that Siegelman was cheated out of votes there is difficult at best to prove.

-- Money from three Diebold executives began trickling into two Republican campaigns last August, just two months after the voting-machine maker banned political giving by a handful of its top brass.

Mike Jacobsen, a spokesman for the manufacturer based in Green, Ohio, expressed regret over the donations, which totaled $1,400 to U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine and state Sen. Kirk Schuring of Canton, according to campaign finance reports.

Some Republicans Returning Cunningham Money
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051202/ap_on_go_co/congressman_bribery_6

Among them are Reps. Richard Pombo of California, Jim Nussle of Iowa, Heather Wilson of New Mexico and Charles Dent of Pennsylvania; Sen. John Thune of South Dakota; Minnesota Senate candidate and Rep. Mark Kennedy (news, bio, voting record); and Oregon congressional candidate Jim Feldkamp.

SNIP

Since 2000, Cunningham has donated over $250,000 from his PAC to fellow Republicans, according to records compiled by PoliticalMoneyLine, which tracks campaign donations.

It's common for lawmakers in safe districts, as Cunningham was, to use their campaign funds to boost fellow lawmakers prospects — thereby boosting their own popularity, too.

At least two Republicans said they were hanging onto Cunningham's money — Rep. Katherine Harris (news, bio, voting record), R-Fla., and Rep. George Radanovich (news, bio, voting record), R-Calif. Both received $1,000 donations — Harris in 2004, Radanovich in 1994. Aides said the money was legally donated and received, and was spent.

Deeper into the Wilkes/MZM scandals

The good news is that reporters working for the mainstream media have caught on -- in part. They understand that Randy "Duke" Cunningham is hardly the only Republican politician to receive economic "assistance" from Brent Wilkes, head of the Poway-based "defense" firm ADCS -- a.k.a. the Wilkes Corporation, a.k.a. Group W Advisors, a.k.a. lots of other names.

<snip>

The truth: Wilkes was a mechanism by which public funds earmarked for national defense were funneled to G.O.P. candidates and causes.
http://cannonfire.blogspot.com/2005/12/deeper-into-wilkesmzm-scandals-updated.html
--------------------------------------------------

Basically, this is a heads up. Wilkes Corp used fabricated "subsidiaries" as funding mechanisms. Lots of Reps involved here. Is Cunningham taking the fall for many others?

HAZLET — Former Mayor Paul A. Coughlin talked about intentionally damaging town hall and creating an emergency need for its demolition in order to award a no-bid contract to a man he believed was a corrupt contractor, according to an indictment handed up Monday by a federal grand jury.

Coughlin, 41, is charged with accepting a $3,000 bribe, conspiracy and extortion, offenses that allegedly occurred during a May 19, 2004, meeting at a Union Beach restaurant with a law enforcement witness posing as a contractor.
