GOP governors: Cunningham scandal won't affect elections

By: WILLIAM FINN BENNETT - Staff Writer

CARLSBAD ---- Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman told reporters Thursday that he finds the behavior of U.S. Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham "disgusting." But he said he doesn't believe the scandal surrounding the congressman will have any real impact on the 2006 congressional or gubernatorial elections.

His remarks came during a brief news conference held outside of the 2005 Republican Governors Conference at La Costa Spa & Resort, where 15 Republican governors are gathered to discuss issues affecting their respective states and share ideas. The meeting began Wednesday and will end today. Reporters were able to attend the conference discussions but were allowed to ask questions only during a subsequent press conference.

A local Democratic official took issue Thursday with Republicans' assertions that the scandals will not affect the 2006 elections. Reached by phone Thursday afternoon, San Diego County Democratic Party Chairman Jess Durfee said he believes Democrats will take back a significant number of congressional seats in the 2006 elections.

2. And how!
Also, the only thing that Mehlman finds disgusting is that Cunningham was stupid and greedy enough to get caught.

7. Took the words right out of my mouth....
Wonder how voters enjoy being told they're amoral and don't care about the culture of corruption?

4. I think he is correct except that I believe Duke is just the beginning
I think many Republican "safe" seats are going to be vacated because of corruption and whether a Democrat or Republican wins those seats will be entirely upon the individual candidate. I think most people consider their local candidate to be different from the highly visible ones that get caught. Nothing has changed. Americans still are going to vote Republican because the entire MSM supports Republicans. Only thing that is going to happen is a lot of very powerful people are going down and new ones will take their place but Democrats are not thought of any better than Republicans. We are losing the propaganda war and that is what counts...

5. Why would the vote-stealing machines care about another repug crime?
They're all set to usher in more rw crooks in 2006.
