GOP Congress to America's Middle Class: "Bah Humbug"

Washington, DC - Republicans in Washington have again put special
interests and wealthy elites ahead of America's working families.
Ignoring the challenges millions of middle class American families face
with the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) this year and next, scandal
plagued Senate Republican Leader Bill Frist has decided instead to focus
on dividend and capital gains tax cuts that will primarily benefit only
those Americans making more than $1 million a year.

The AMT was "created decades ago to prevent the wealthiest citizens
from sheltering most of their income from the Internal Revenue Service,"
but "because inflation has driven wages higher over the years, it
increasingly threatens more taxpayers considered to be middle class,
with incomes of $50,000 to $75,000." The non-partisan Tax Policy Center
estimates that 3.5 million people will be subject to the AMT in 2005,
and that the number will jump to 15 million taxpayers in 2006 if there
is no change in the law.

"Once again Republicans in Washington have made it clear that they just
don't care about the values and priorities of America's middle class
families," said Democratic National Committee Communications Director
Karen Finney. "While ensuring that their millionaire friends get yet
another tax break, all Republicans in Washington are offering America's
middle class families is a big bag of coal. Democrats believe that
middle class families deserve better."

1. This is great but how many Americans will hear...
one whisper about this gigantic screw job. Or will they be captivated by gay weddings and illegal aliens?
