We need a better term than "corporatism." |
|
Edited on Fri Dec-16-05 08:08 AM by gulliver
The term "corporatism" is a loser. What we really need is a term for the unchecked power of business.
First, a lot of the more Bushian crony/corrupt businesses are probably privately held or partnerships, not necessarily corporations. Second, the term "corporatist" can be confused with people who believe in the system of business through incorporation rather than someone who tries to weaken or subvert government to allow abuses by business. Third, a lot of people work for or own stock in corporations, so appearing to attack them is a two-edged sword at best.
I think we need to be against the "unchecked power of unethical business interests." A strong and ethically transparent government elected by the people is the check. How do we get across that idea?
On edit: Added period to end of subject and added word "necessarily".

3. Actually the broad groups |
|
you don't want to offend are the basic support for the protected renegades who are allowed to rule the roost and dole out the stolen loot. It is a case of crooks protected by their peer group and "base". the term is too professorial I suppose. What one wants to without saying that conscienceless materialism is a necessary evil is isolate the evildoers who are dragging down the whole. In order not to scare people naturally paranoid about a divide and conquer strategy?
It is not the term but the purpose that is being criticized. In fact in that case just call them renegade tyrants and crooks. Take your pick, but nothing will get traction until the tainted system decides it is ok or necessary to dump its trash in such a way as to avoid any consequences.

6. "unregulated capitalism" gets the message across, imo . . . |
|
doesn't imply that capitalism or corporations are bad, only that they need to be regulated . . . I can think of few things that have damaged us more than the move to deregulate corporations since the Reagan years . . .

8. Why not call it what it is? FASCISM |
|
The fact that corporations have too much power in this current government is a text book example of what Mussolini meant when he equated the terms "fascism" and "corporatism". And I dare say the Bush Criminal Empire themselves have a direct involvement in far more corporations than anything Benito or Adolph could have imagined. From Clear Channel to Dell Computers to Dunkin fucking Donuts these pigs are trying to buy in to everything.

28. No matter how appropriate, as is its equivalent "corporatism", |
|
it won't resonate well with the people.
I don't think it connects well with what (most/many) people think of government and corporations.

21. Privatized governance |
|
"Privatization" gets compartmentalized and supposedly carries a benefit of improved efficiency, but we have seen that the only improved efficiency is the transfer of wealth from ordinary citizens to private contractors who kick back a small part of that wealth to buy further influence. It brings cronyism and corruption.
Using the word "governance" instead of "government" jogs peoples minds as it is slightly unexpected, and may give that nano-second of opportunity to remember that government derives its legitimacy from the people governed.
The Washington excesses of the war on terror are a direct outgrowth of the right's prior incarnation, a so-called free market war on democracy and regulated capitalism. The logical extension of making monied insiders the sole source of governance is that non-monied citizenry has no voice, no representation. We are enslaved by private governance. It was an equally bad idea to take the legitimate defense of our nation and privatize it's motives to unelected, unaccountable profiteers.

My take on it though, is to attack WEAK GOVERNMENT regulation of business, and BAD election finance laws.
I try not to blame a business that is acting lawfully.

24. Whatever we come up with, I think whore should be part of it. |
|
I make a distinction between corporate and corpwhorate. As a whore sells his or her own body for money, a corpwhorate sells the bodies of our own citizens for money and power. I believe if we use corpwhorate enough, Webster's Dictionary may start putting it in their books.

30. I'll stick with Corporatism. It's a very descriptive term. |
|
It's a lot less corrupted than the term "fascist," and it's ten times more descriptive of what it is I'm talking about than the caricaturized, bastardized definition of fascism in popular culture.
