Congressman calls for Bush impeachment

Congressman calls for Bush impeachment

The Associated Press - ATLANTA

U.S. Rep. John Lewis said Monday in a radio interview that President Bush should be impeached if he broke the law in authorizing spying on Americans.

The Democratic senator from Georgia told WAOK-AM he would sign a bill of impeachment if one was drawn up and that the House of Representatives should consider such a move.

8. I believe that a majority has to vote to begin the process.
Remember the process during the Nixon and Clinton years: a majority voted to begin proceedings.

17. I think Republicans would decide on whether it'd even be debated.
They get to set the agenda, if I understand correctly. But it sure looks like any real legal debate would show this as an unconstitutional abuse of power.

I don't even think this calls for an investigation per se -- but a debate and a movement in Congress to lay out the facts and get sufficient support for impeachment hearings.

19. But my point is that UNTIL someone brings it up, the republicans don't
even have to defeat it because its defeated already.

They don't have to shoot down anything if dems are too timid to throw it up there.

In that case the republicans have absolutely won without even being bothered.

in other words, like the previous 5 years.

I thought if this guy THOUGHT there should be an impeachment, don't talk to the press, start the ball rolling.

3. Thank you John Lewis. You are a true patriot.

I am proud he is a fellow Georgian. It is politicians like John Lewis, Cynthia McKinney, President Carter, Andrew Young and former senators Sam Nunn and Max Cleland that make me have some hope for the political future of our state.

7. McKinney is a bright spot indeed.
Considering how shamefully the party and the AC treated her during her last term, you're lucky to have her.

9. She and John make me so proud.
Neal Boortz (RW radio host from Atlanta) constanly refers to her as "the cutest little communist in congress." He both demeans her as a woman and as a politicain and true patriotic American citizen. It's funny though: he never speaks at all about John Lewis. He must know not to go there.

10. For those of you who do not know,
Rep. Lewis was one of the true heroes of the Civil Rights Movement. He has not been honored as much as he should have been for his courage. (He was beaten very badly for daring to challenge segregation in the South.)

11. YES!!!! SOMEONE FINALLY SAID THE I-WORD!!!
No, he isn't a Senator as the article erroneously noted, but he's one helluva Congressman.

Someone had to be the first to tiptoe into those waters. I hope others follow suit.

12. This will be equivalent to the "shot heard around the world" at Lexington
and Concord, MA that started the first American Revolution.

13. I just heard a Former Reagan White House official do the same...
...it was part of a story on NPR's "All Things Considered" a few minutes ago, so I'll be a few minutes before I can tell you exactly who it was, when they post it to the Internet in about an hour I'll give an update.

I think he was either the A.G. or in the A.G.'s office from the Reagan Administration.

Here's the link, the audio will be posted at about 7:00pm ET

You don't have to hide it in a "joke".

Yes, i know calling for it does not make it so, but it is a first step, that anyone can take.
