MSNBC: "On the rebound: Bush job approval rating jumps significantly"

Bush’s support jumps after long decline
Poll shows growing optimism on Iraq, economy

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10538012/

By Dan Balz and Richard Morin
The Washington Post
Updated: 9:57 p.m. ET Dec. 19, 2005

President Bush's approval rating has surged in recent weeks, reversing what had been an extended period of decline, with Americans now expressing renewed optimism about the future of democracy in Iraq, the campaign against terrorism and the U.S. economy, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News Poll.

:wtf:

Bush's overall approval rating rose to 47 percent, from 39 percent in early November, with 52 percent saying they disapprove of how he is handling his job. His approval rating on Iraq jumped 10 percentage points since early November, to 46 percent, while his rating on the economy rose 11 points, to 47 percent. A clear majority, 56 percent, said they approve of the way Bush is handling the fight against terrorism -- a traditional strong point in his reputation that nonetheless had flagged to 48 percent in the November poll.

The marked improvement in Bush's fortunes comes after months of erosion in the president's political standing that tracked a series of problems afflicting his administration. The most significant was the continuing violence and mounting U.S. casualties in Iraq, but high gasoline prices and the federal government's slow response to Hurricane Katrina also caused increasing numbers of Americans to register doubts about Bush's leadership.

The Post-ABC News poll suggests that the massive turnout in last week's elections in Iraq, coupled with a public relations offensive in which the president delivered five speeches and held one news conference in 19 days, have delivered a substantial year-end dividend to a president badly in need of good news.

1. THIS IS AN OUTLYING POLL
ARG and Gallup have Shrub at 41% yet they're taking this poll as fact.

5. You're right!
I was watching MSNBC today, and was totally disheartened because they were acting like Shrubbie had singlehandedly overcome all his political problems. Only after I logged into DU and read some of the other poll results did I realize that MSNBC is full of BS.

30. What it shows is that the public wants people who fight...
regardless of "what" they think or practice. Bush's recent combative style IS the bounce....don't confuse that with a message.

2. We Are in the Midst of a Coup
Bush is trying to complete his power grab... the media is giving him cover. We are truly living in a very scarey time.

Bush has to be Impeached NOW!

8. Bullshit, balz!
I've read several polls that say people aren't buying what bush is
selling!

"Poll: Bush fails to sway public on Iraq
By Susan Page, USA TODAY
The series of speeches President Bush delivered during the past three weeks defending the invasion of Iraq failed to buy patience for the war or convince more Americans that the conflict is part of a broader campaign against terrorism, according to a USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup Poll taken over the weekend. (Related: Poll results)"

9. Optimism?

That's not what I see or heard or sensed. Fear and unwillingness to deal with reality is more like it. Relief at lowered expectations on Iraq and lessened ego damage, too.

Funny how no other pollings see all this 'optimism' and all the fundamental ratings are unchanged. Only the emphasis is different- Terra, terra, terra, that's all that is going on.

Oh, ratings rose on Iraq last January at those elections. Rose back up to the limits of the wavering political demographic. Then the whole wavering demographic- Independents- gave up on the crap wholesale in a matter of weeks when it all failed to solve anything. Gee, do you think the same thing might be happening with moderate Republicans with these elections....

10. Bush appeals to the weak minded who can't admit they
voted for a coward and a fraud.

They just need to look at reality: www.icasualties.org and then look how his policies has hurt our standard of living.

11. WHAT A CROCK OF BULL!
Are we to believe that a few canned speeches and softball television interviews with a scripted "journalist" has suddenly turned around the minds of millions and now we are all optimistic about iraq and the economy.

That is utterly and totally ridiculous at it's core. Wow. Propaganda at it's slimiest.

I seem to remember some biased reporting during last year's campaign, though I don't think I can cough up an actual article to prove that.

14. Not according to the CNN poll...
I'd bet $100 that the WP/ABCNews polls have been messed with. Explain this to me...Today, MSNBC had a poll and it was 80/20...the twenty favoring Shrub. What significant jump? These people think we are the stupidest people on the planet.

Peace.

17. It figures...and the Iraq issue could turn against Dems in 06'
If the Republicans succeed in painting all Dems with the broad brush of the "Out of Iraq NOW!" crowd. This will especially be the case if the political and security situation in Iraq improves in 06'

24. You're right about that. Can't you just hear the rhetoric now?
"Had the democrats been in charge we would have cut and run and Iraq would be in the hands of the terrorists and not the secure democracy you see today. Shame would have been brought to America for turning our backs on freedom."

That will definitely sell in Red State Country. George Allen is no doubt practicing his delivery right now.

20. Euphoric/emotional response to Iraqi Elections
"The findings in the new poll are based on telephone interviews with 1,003 randomly selected adults, taken between last Thursday and Sunday. The interviewing covered the period immediately after last week's Iraqi election but was completed before the president's nationally televised address on Sunday night. "

32. Corporate Media Echo Chamber: NBC touts"old news" of ABC's poll? WTF?
ARG and Zogby (two more respectable polling organizations) both have Bush still in the 30's.

The only "news" here is that NBC is touting an ABC poll as an echo chamber.
