Recall that in the Senate it was the pro-Duce senators who didn't want to extend the current act. They wanted instead to replace it with a Patriot Act II which would be permanent. The Rawstory link really has no information, but Sensenbrenner may just be another Republican trying to speed the day when the Act's provisions becomes permanent.

He's just doing this to save Bush the embarassment of vetoing a temporary extension as he promised he would. Now Bush can call a special session of Congress...

5. There's a Machivellian strategy at work here..Sensenbrenner |
|
is a STAUNCH supporter of the Patriot Act, in fact has worked fervently to quash or limit debate on this matter, please recall the hearing held on this matter last summer - when he shut down debate, illegally adjourned the hearing, shut off the lights and cut off the mics - (C-Span was broadcasting this live) .
Something is very machivellian is up, Sensenbrenner is not a person of "sense", at least not to be interpreted as "reasonable".

there won't be time for hearings on SCOTUS nomination.
They have to debate USAPATRIOT act quickly now and of course have hearings on the spying.
Busy, busy, busy.
The last thing we can accept is another bush nominee making it to SCOTUS.

9. And O'Connor has agreed to stay on as long as it takes... |

so between the Patriot Act, Pre-War Intelligence Investigation Hearings, Domestic Spying and Wire Tap investigations, i think the priority of the SCOTUS is slipping down the ranks of priorities if you know what i mean.
and by the way, there is the little mentioned matter of Rummy preparing for other wars, with China, Iran, Regime Change in Cuba, Bolivia, Venezuela, and what about Korea?
hmmm...
I think we need to have a RECALL ELECTION in January.
