Another Wedge Issue Idea For '06 and '08

Ok, bear with me on this one.

There are tons of folks out there who are Democrats at hearts, particularly in the South, Midwest and West, who have become disenchanted with their party because of one issue: guns.

They believe the very effective spin the Republicans have been putting out for many years; that Democrats are "gun grabbers" and want to come into your homes and leave you defenseless.

It all plays into the Big Government boogy man multiple wedge issues that the Republicans utilize to scare the lower middle class into voting against their own self interests.

What if we had a SMART candidate, who got along with hunters and gun hobbyists, and who was able to tie the Patriot Act overreaching and the wiretap overreaching into an effective discussion of BOTH fourth amendment and second amendment rights?

In simple language, the subtext would be: how can you trust that a party that is illegally spying into your home won't also want to take away your guns? Isn't that the next logical step? I mean, it's all in the name of fighting "terrists", right?

I think this could be as effective a wedge issue for us as Terry Schiavo/privacy rights, etc.

And it would also nicely turn the gun issue into a net plus for us and net negative for the dark side.

And it ties nicely into our general wedge issue meme for '08: the Republicans want Big Brother government that slowly and deviously strips you of various basic liberties and freedoms.

They are SCARY MOTHAFUCKAS, Mr. and Mrs. Kansas.

6. Bingo!!! I've been telling my dipshit relatives

that these asswipes would gladly take their guns away from them if they began to think of them as a threat. The * gang has already shown that they dont give a fuck about the constitution it's not a great leap of imagination to visualize a zcenario in which they gain access to the membership rolls of the NRA to locate gun owners throughout the country and then pay a visit to these citizens to confiscate their guns. Myself, my cousins, nephews and nieces, brother and my 80-year old uncle all are firearms owners and hunters and everyone is a member of NRA except me. I'm not making much progress, because they've drank the koolaid big time but I never give up and I have another opportunity to piss em off and get them thinking on xmas. They need to hear this from someone besides me.
