Jim Dean, DFA meet with Lieberman, ask him to filibuster Alito if needed.
Remember when Jim Dean and DFA delivered the petition to Joe Lieberman after Joe said we questioned the president at our nation's peril?

From December 13.

"Yesterday morning, the weather was anything but warm and congenial as a group of stalwart DFA folk met up in Hartford with Jim to present Senator Lieberman's office with the "Let Joe Know" letter, signed by 55,000 Americans—over 1,500 of who are from Connecticut. We braved a distinctly unfriendly security guard and icy temperatures to make sure the heavy box containing the letter and all those signatures got into the hands of Senator Lieberman's aide, Ken Dagliare. Ken was friendly as always, and promised the Senator would pay close attention to the letter, and was open to a meeting with DFA.

We then stood with Jim as he did a great job with the press, which has been very interested in the unrest in the Senator's constituency. Later I watched the evening news with my daughter, Fiona, who at this point is fairly blase' about seeing Mommy on television. "

Well, Jim met again with Lieberman yesterday to talk things over. I am gathering from Jim's post that the status quo is still status quo with Joe and his Joementum. I think it sounds as if it were handled graciously.

Though we disagree with Senator Lieberman on the war, we asked him to take a position against the administration's rumored plan for permanent military bases in Iraq. We also asked the Senator to oppose the Alito confirmation—to the point of taking part in a filibuster if necessary. And we asked him to oppose the extension of the Patriot Act in its current form.

The Senator responded by expressing apprehension over Judge Alito's candidacy as well as certain provisions of the Patriot Act, but refused to take a public stance on either issue until a full evaluation of all the information has been conducted.

This was not a kumbya (Dear blog that is spelled Kumbayah) meeting, nor was it Gladiator with a tie on. I expected to come out of this with a better understanding of our respective positions but I did not expect anyone to change positions. And that is exactly how it went.

Senator Lieberman—if nothing else—is a gracious man and a listener. It matters a great deal to me that he was willing to have us into his office knowing that we have some major differences about the direction our country is headed in. Sadly, it matters because we are governed by a presidential administration that does not believe in debate and punishes dissent, but it matters nonetheless.

I fully expect these kinds of conversations to continue in Connecticut right through the Senator's re-election campaign.

Thanks to Jim and DFA CT for taking on this task. Little by little is how it will be done.

1. Sounds like Joe is slippery as always
Jim Dean does not appreciate being glad handed, and we shall see what comes ofthis. I know if it were up to a vote in California with DFA here, Joe would be begging for mercy.

2. "glad-handed", yes, sounds that way.
It sounds like he was more gracious than I would be...or that I feel about Lieberman right now. How dare that man tell us we endanger our nation? How dare he?

BTW did you guys ever buy Jim Dean that new shirt, so he wouldn't have to wear the same one to two cities?

3. I was glad to see that Jim Dean used the word "filibuster" and Alito...
in the same sentence. Talking about it is a good thing.
