the official reason for Mrs. Alito's hysterics is released
Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 02:25 AM by warbly
On Wednesday, one of those Republicans, Mr. Graham, tried to mock the Democrats with a question about the alumni group, which opposed affirmative action.

"Are you really a closet bigot?" Mr. Graham asked, at which point Mrs. Alito drew her hands to her face and left the hearing room weeping.

On Thursday, the judge's sister Rosemary Alito said her sister-in law took Mr. Graham's comments as they were intended, as a message of support.

"Martha understood them to be kind comments," Ms. Alito said. "It was that expression of warmth, the feeling of support for Sam, that triggered an emotional response."

The tears, in turn, triggered a political response, as Democrats faced questions about whether they had been too hard on the judge and whether it would hurt them.

NY Times
So she burst into tears because of the kindness Graham showed when asking "Are you really a closet bigot?"
Naw. At that moment she thought he was serious, and lost it because she knows he is exactly a closet bigot. I stand by my analysis, talking points be damned. Once again the lying right manages to spin out of another Kerfluffle.
The Democrats should call it what it is, Ridiculous.
Filibuster the creep. If they kill the judicial filibuster it will only help the dems in the long run, to put some decent judges on the court. Better to fight then to just let him slide on. Make them show what Fascists they are.

1. So it's official - it was theatrics
"the judge's sister Rosemary Alito said her sister-in law took Mr. Graham's comments as they were intended, as a message of support."

Who bursts into tears upon hearing a recitation of what your spouse supposedly IS NOT?

2. The Alito's are the upper crust rich
Mrs. Alito faced hardship for the first time in her life and she buckled. Just imagine if she had been born poor, black, and in an urban setting. She's a ditz.

4. martha alito's lips mouthed the word 'YES" in response to Graham's
questions, then her body shifted sides as in someone who is uncomfortable with what they have just done but knows not how to get out of it, then she started crying. martha alito lips said YES. she knows he is closet bigot, she revealed it, she did not know how to get out of it, she fell into an unexpected trap, did not know how to get out of it, then she started crying, like a scared child who is going to have hell to pay when she gets home. period.

peace.

6. I wasn't watching when that happened,
but do you think it was an involuntary reaction to the question? For example, I've heard body language experts say that liars will sometimes nod their heads affirmatively when asked if they're lying, even while answering "no" at the same time. The involuntary action gives them away.

Also, regarding Mrs. Alito, if she's such a fragile little flower that she can't take the heat her husband is facing in the hearings, then she needs to stay home.

8. i do think that "Yes" was an involuntary action on her part followed by
a shift in her head and her body when she realized what she had done. i do believe the woman answered that question truthfully but involuntarily and i believe it was caught on tape.

and while i did not watch the whole episode but only the first 8 seconds of the CNN tape, here is what someone else said on one of these posts yesterday:

i believe the link takes you directly to an even more illuminating reply posted on that thread.

5. It was Drama 101.
And I think the Dems should ignore it. It only plays to the GOP base vis-a-vis Faux News. It has absolutely nothing to do with proceedings, just the usual whining coming from the Republicans to throw a monkey wrench in the works.

9. i suppose that viewing martha alito's response as significant or not,
Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 12:31 PM by flordehinojos
depends really on how you focus on the situation. for instance, if we had been watching a PERRY MASON or an ELLERY QUEEN movie, martha alito's lips saying "YES" may have been the moment that let the cat out of the bag FOR ALL TO SEE.

I do believe she did let the cat out of the bag. I think it is tragic that no one has taken that as a serious moment, and i think that the deafening silence about it in the press, is a form of censorship.

And, seeing that golden moment of martha alito's involutary YES anser to the question, "are you a closet bigot, slip and slide, i ask myself, how would that episode have been used if the "whistle blower", for lack of a better term, had been other that martha alito.

the whole thing feels and tastes like censorship...a censorship which also connects with specter limiting those panelists who were speaking today against alito, to five minutes each this morning, after he, yesterday, out of deference to a panel of "distinguished judges who had serve with alito" and were there to speak favorably on behalf of alito, gave them all the time they wanted to use in their intros and support of alito and in their question/and/answer period which was mostly used by the republican senators to help bring out the shine of the golden boy.

bigotry is bigotry is bigotry.

13. the Republicans have successfully marginalized Dems
with these maneuvers, making a mockery out of our congressional procedures. However, allowing America to see this on C-SPAN really took some of the air out of the performance because it was viewed in context, at least by the "left" half of America. The wrong "right" half merely had the clip played for them over and over and over again and were susceptible to the suggestion that the Dems had invoked this response. I guess there is so much crap flying around out there lobbed by the Republicans, this was just the same BS, different day IMO.

12. I'll give her credit for a genuine reaction, however I don't believe that
her emotions should be allowed in any way to shape policy in our nation.

Maybe we should videotape ourselves crying everytime * and the neocons upset us so much that we're reduced to tears. Send them somewhere or post them to the internet with the news or *'s speech in the background.

Not that they'd care, but it would point out the lack of relevance to anyone with half a brain or more.

Next time, she can stay away, if it is that hard.

But she's not the villain, her hubby and the neocons and bigots are.

If there is any chance that her feelings are genuine, I say leave her alone AND don't hesitate to point out how irrelevant it is to the process.

IMHO
