Ok Maine. Will Snowe be vulnerable if she votes for Alito? |
|
I think she should be. There is no way you can say that you are centrist and vote for this man. Can you?

:) http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=156&topic_id=1590&mesg_id=1590Michael Brennan is not running. Eric Mehnert hasn't done much campaigning. Jean Hay Bright has been campaigning for almost a year.

Bush's Approval rating in Maine is 37-60 And yet Snowe's Approval rating is 75-22
So, #1 How is this possible #2 Will an Alito vote bring her approval rating come down #3 How will we convince people in less than a year that she is not as moderate as she seems and bring the most popular senator in the country to defeat in 2006?

6. The media have given her and Susie a free ride |

The moderate label has stuck. They are very vocal in their opposition to the president or the GOP leadership and get the headlines, but then they cast their votes and no one's paying attention. They a lso pad their voting stats by voting against the GOP when victory is already assured. It's worked so well the GOP here is pissed at them. They both have better numbers among Democrats and Unenrolled voters than Republicans. If we erode that support, it weakens them both substantially.
I think a vote for Alito will hurt her IF the Democrats filibuster. As I posted below, if we don't filibuster, we give her cover. If we filibuster and she votes against it, it will hurt her here.
#3 is the hard part. In my county 45% of Gore voters crossed over and voted for Snowe. If I can convince even 80% of those voters to vote for us this time, we win. It's going to take a tremendous effort but it isn't nearly the impossibility most people think.

5. This is why we need a filibuster. |

If Snowe and other Republicans are let off the hook, she can say she was just doing the advice and consent part - just like most Democrats were. If we force her to make a choice and she backs up the Republicans, we can take that issue to the voters. The worst case is that the vote is a slam dunk and Snowe does what she has done in the past with federal judges. She has a history of voting against some of Bush's judges when confirmation is assured so she can maintain her "moderate" label in the media.
Our motto is: She votes the wrong way when it matters and the right way when it doesn't.
