CounterPunch: Alito and Opus Dei
CounterPunch
Alito and Opus Dei
By MICHAEL CARMICHAEL
January 30, 2006

Is Judge Samuel Alito a member of Opus Dei?

If so, does it matter? If it matters, why?

A Senate staffer confirmed that the Judiciary Committee received numerous "notes and letters" stating that Judge Samuel Alito is a member of Opus Dei.

A controversial Catholic organization*, Opus Dei is now widely known from the bestseller, The Da Vinci Code, a novel by American author Dan Brown, soon to be a major film starring Tom Hanks that will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

1. Alert the fundies!!!!! They regard Catholicism as a cult, and Alito would
make CATHOLICS A MAJORITY on the Supremes! Quite frankly, I am surprised they didn't raise that flag before this, but I guess the abortion business quieted their concerns.

This is a long way from a single, solitary Catholic president, that everyone feared would take orders from a Vatican hotline (seriously, people did raise that issue about JFK). Perhaps the 700 Club prejudices could be brought to bear, only pity is that this wasn't raised a bit sooner.

My question is, would he wear his celice while on the bench???

Have no clue what I am referring to? See here: http://www.odan.org/corporal_mortification.htm

8. I still think she caught a glance at herself in the monitor
She got dressed in the dark, and mistook the barcolounger cover for her smart tweed suit!

2. notes and letters?
Well that certainly has me convinced.

I mean those notes and letters wouldn't exist if he weren't a member of Opus Dei, right?

3. Interesting article - funny how Opus Dei gets the Pope's approval in
1982 just after the Calvi murder in London, also I think all of the freemason's were given a green light as well about this time.

4. Can You Say "Theocracy"? I Knew You Could
That is what Opus Dei wants.

6. Opus Dei! Learn up, people. Not good for humanity. Study up. They
fit like a glove with the all Republicans who want to reverse rights and Amendments, but who want to add their own.

10. He presents The Da Vinci Code as his primary source?
Yes, Opus Dei is a conservative Catholic organization. Where's the proof that all the supposed Opus Dei in public life are actually members? Where's the proof that they are influenced by Opus Dei? Were they good liberals until the evil group got hold of them? Or did they come up with their hateful policies on their own? Are all the bad policies of the RC Church the work of Opus Dei? Why is Ashcroft apparently a sympathizer? (The same Ashcroft who received an honorary degree from Bob Jones University--whose first honor went to the Rev. Ian Paisley?)

There are plenty of real-world reasons to oppose Alito without considering his possible membership in a secret group (with a website).

Mr. Carmichael is definitely into some interesting things. But--just perhaps--psychoactive drugs & esoteric alchemy are not what's needed here.
