1. I'm sure all of 10 people will switch channels |
|
give it a rest - this is the wrong ad at the wrong time. Why is MoveOn wasting money? There is plenty of time for that ad to be seen.

You're right! Why would running an ad that was not allowed to run on CBS generate any free advertisement through news coverage of the issue! Save a cool million in advertising while getting your point across, especially after you had a pre-emptive attack against your organization over the Hitler flap....
yeah, I see your point!
Clever!
:eyes:
I also think you over estimate the number of people who even care about this game....MA and the Carolinas are not LA and NY.......

2. OPPOSITE the super bowl?!? |
|
are you kidding me?
we're trying to reach that huge, all-important swing voting constituency that watches tv during the super bowl, but not the super bowl, not mtv, not a movie; but, no, they watch the NEWS?!
how many swing voters are we really going to reach this way?
a COMPLETE waste of money imho.

Doesn't MoveOn realize that 3/4 of Superbowl watchers will be good and plastered by the time that ad ran? GET OVER IT - save your money for later.

7. It was probably really cheap. |
|
Heck, CNN might have given it to them for free.
Opposite the Super Bowl has got to be the cheapest TV time ever.

no why would they run an ad on a 24 hour news channel, after they had been banned from running the ad on CBS and had been attacked by the RNC over the Hitler flap....
you got me....
I guess they should just shut up and take it! You know, typical Dem stuff....

They are worthless anyway.
But I agree MoveOn.Org shouldn't blow all that money on the SuperBowl anyway. Why not save its money until October and then go great guns? I can't believe Howard Dean blew $45 million on ads that nobody saw. What did he spend it on? Iowa?
People aren't ready to make a decision about the presidency. We don't even have a nominee yet. Bush's got 200 million and MoveOn should HoldOn to its Cash until things get hairy. Like after the Republican convention.

about not being able to show this ad at a superbowl game. People want upbeat, funny ads. This is a "downer" ad to the average american. I actually don't blame CBS if you want to know the truth. Why bring their audience down? I think it would end up backfiring anyway. I could see a whole room of drunk men shouting "Boo" Its a waste of money.

I think thats why they said NO to showing the add. They dont wanna mix sports(fun) and politics. They do not make good bedfellows.

14. I saw a preview of some of the Superbowl ads... |
|
on some entertainment show, posibbly on E!. Apparently a Pepsi ad is going to feature kids that have been sued by the RIAA for file sharing. The theme of the commercial seems to be addressing a somewhat devisive topic lately of regular people going up against the music industry, and it seems a little ironic that this ad from the Pepsi company will be featured during probably the most commercialized event of the year. I also thought one of the reasons that CBS refused to play the MoveOn.org ad was because they don't want to support particular "positions." That Pepsi ad suggests an anti-corporate position to me, while at the same time pandering to young potential Pepsi drinkers. I don't find this ad's topic to be upbeat. I won't be watching the Superbowl, because I don't find watching TV solely for commercials that enjoyable.

22. The sentiment of not mixing politics and sports... |
|
is perfectly admirable. But if my memory serves me correctly, the NFL kicked off their season last year with a concert on the Washington mall. Britney Spears(Pepsi spokesperson, hmm...) was the headliner.
The event was called "Operation Tribute to Freedom" and was supposed to be a concert for 5,000 military personnel. Maybe they could have used the money for the event for some gear for our soldiers like, for example, those kevlar vests that seemed to be in short supply. The whole thing sure seemed like a great way to put our nation's capitol to use.

13. This isn't about playing the ad during the Superbowl |
|
it's about highlighting the fact that:
1) A network station did not allow an ad to be run, thereby using censorship....perhaps some of you have forgotten who owns the air waves....
2) MoveOn got hit unfairly by the Repugs over the Hitler ad and airing this ad will get it played on news programs and show people that MoveOn is not some radical group that is nutsy.....so the ads will be taken serious when the time comes....
It is called pushing back!
3) The newtorks have run issue advocacy ads in the past...remember the "if you smoke pot you support terrorists ad campaign.." Plus, as Bill Mahr points out...every ad is an advocacy ad....they are advocating the consumption of beer and crappy fast food....
4) if history is any judge, most of America will have changed the channel by half time anyway...hell, it's Carolina against the Pats.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....I remember the 80s, when the only thing we watched that was fun was the commercials....now they suck too...
One final note......this was just an announcement about an event for information...some could suggest that getting oneself up in a lather over this is just as bad as MoveOn choosing to run their ad now....
Now this is all the time I have to spend on this as arguing over this is just plain silly.....

15. The Pot add was not run against a canidate(it was an issue) |
|
And you must be slightly unbalanced if you think people turn off a close game. High scoring or low if its close people will stay glued.
I mean no disrespect but this is the superbowl and to think people will go to CNN is just silly. The mercials are better on CBS for this event.

Edited on Sun Feb-01-04 01:49 AM by Nazgul35
First, my intitial reason for posting this thread was that I know that many people here actually want to see the MoveOn ad, and I was posting this simply to let DUers know that it was going to be on....
This quickly decended into defense of their reasoning because some thought it was dumb, or didn't have the right to be on the superbowl or the message would not be received well....
Again, for those of you here on DU who have been discussing the MoveOn ad for several months and would like to see the ad, it will be playing on CNN at the times I listed above......
edited to add:
for those of you who want to know how popular football is at DU, I invite you to stroll over to the general topic forum and see....

|
The members of DU already know of Moveon and the add has been on there for weeks. It was nice of you to let everyone know that they can switch stations or turn on the tv to see this add.
I applaud you for your giving this info to all of the active members!!! I am just being honest in the fact that it is a waste of $$$ on Moveons part. I doubt .001% of people will change channels so thats a waste of money.
BTW, Go to the Lounge and you might find that football is popular. Sweet Dreams Nazgul35.

If it's about bummer ads,why are they showing a B*** ad? First the RW gets the stupid Raygun movie dropped now this mild but truthful ad. Who cares about this game anyway without the Bears.

to see the ads, but thanks for posting the times. Seems there are a lot of people posting on this thread who want to denounce any showing of the MoveOn ad, anytime, anywhere. Hmmm. Not surprising. Seems the ad has hit some sore spots, and it seems that the stink raised over prohibition of this ad has generated a fair number of airings already, Good work, MoveOn! Wide distribution at a low cost, and also raising the fact that the corporate media is not driven so much by income as by the desire to perpetuate their control over what is seen and heard by the people of this country, and making sure that no voice challenging corporatist rule is heard on the "public" airways.
