http://www.dlc.org

http://www.ppionline.org

http://www.third-way.com

Thank you.

4). Organizational structures: Historical through current.
5). State and local offices: Throughout the 50 states.
6). State and local officials and office staffing: Throughout the 50 states.

It is my hope to put together a database on the DLC.

This will be a tremendous undertaking, and is not likely to be available in time to affect the 2006 elections.

However, it is my goal to have this database fully functional by the end of 2007.

This will be in time to directly affect the Democratic Party's nationwide primary processes for the 2008 general elections for federal, state, and local elected offices.

If you have any ideas or input that will be of assistance, then kindly post such in this thread.

Ultimately, the data that are submitted, compiled, organized, and verified here will be put in the research forum and serve as a database for all DU members.

One day soon, I hope, DU members will be able to utilize this database to clearly, accurately, and effectively discuss, deliberate, and take action on the DLC.

Good Luck!

To locate a specific registrant or identification number, use your browser's 'FIND' or 'SEARCH' features (or SCROLL DOWN). If you make a mistake, use the browser's BACK button to return to previous page.

NOTE: This list contains every registrant/client relationship for which any filing was received by the SOPR. Many registrants have since terminated the lobbying activity with respect to clients listed. The inclusion of any number on this list does not indicate 'ACTIVE' or 'CURRENT' status, merely that a filing had been received pursuant to the LDA."

Lobbying for legislation is a permitted activity for a 501(C)(4) organization (see below).

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-tege/eotopicm95.pdf

If you'd like to know why every damn operational and organizational detail you'd like to know about the DLC is a big secret, then just read the above report.

It carefully lays out the rules that a 501(C)(4) organization must follow.

It is like a field of tax and disclosure land mines, which one false step could trigger.

One wrong move and the organization could lose its 501 (C)(4) status and be required to submit much more detailed tax returns and possibly lose tax-exempt status, though that is unlikely.

However, the 501 (C)(4) organization is required to file a form 990 tax return.

From this return, a lot of questions about the financing of this organization would be answered.

However, the Democratic Leadership Council's form 990 is just not available anywhere, IMO.

If you can direct me to it, then please do so.

12. "Third Way" is what Mussolini called fascism
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mussolini>

Under the dictatorship, the effectiveness of parliamentary system was virtually abolished though its forms were publicly preserved. The law codes were rewritten. All teachers in schools and universities had to swear an oath to defend the Fascist regime. Newspaper editors were all personally chosen by Mussolini himself, and no one could practice journalism who did not possess a certificate of approval from the Fascist party. These certicicates were issued in secret, so the public had no idea of this ever occurring, thus skillfully creating the illusion of a "free press". The trade unions were also deprived of any independence and were integrated into what was called the "cooperative" system. The aim (never completely achieved), inspired by medieval guilds, was to place all Italians in various professional organizations or "corporations", all of them under clandestine governmental control. Another change is that all schools, newspapers etc. etc. had to not write the 13th of June 1933 but instead had to write the 13th of June of the 11th year of Mussolini's power.

Mussolini played up to his financial backers at first by transferring a number of industries from public to private ownership. But by the 1930s he had begun moving back to the opposite extreme of rigid governmental control of industry. A great deal of money was spent on highly visible public works, and on international prestige projects such as the SS Rex, Blue Riband ocean liner <1>, but the economy suffered from his strenuous efforts to make Italy self-sufficient. A concentration on heavy industry proved problematic, because Italy lacked the basic resources.

In foreign policy, Mussolini soon shifted from the pacifist anti-imperialism of his lead-up to power, to an extreme form of aggressive nationalism. An early example of this was his bombardment of Corfu in 1923. Soon after this he succeeded in setting up a puppet regime in Albania and in ruthlessly consolidating Italian power in Libya, loosely a colony since 1912.

13. Interesting bits behind Lieberman and others..
http://www.counterpunch.org/werther12172005.html

The DLC was--and is--a creature of New York high roller Michael Steinhardt, son of Sol Steinhardt, a jewel fence for the Meyer Lansky mob. Like most of organized crime, Steinhardt fils decided to go upmarket and merge with Wall Street. His millions created the Hon. Joseph Lieberman (D-CT).

Steinhardt is also notable for his loose interpretation of the law of possession. In the early 1990s, he attempted to corner the market on Treasury securities, an audacious strategy which resulted in his having to pay $70 million in civil penalties to the Securities and Exchange Commission--a record fine at the time. Weep not for Steinhardt, though: he made $600 million from the scam.

Steinhardt, a certifiable pro-Israel fanatic, guarantees that the Democrats will not offer a genuine political alternative to the neoconservative-dominated Republicans. Should anyone wonder why the putatively limp-wristed Democrats vote for war in Iraq and for fiscally irresponsible military budgets, Steinhardt (and his AIPAC-connected confreres) offer a rationale: should Democratic Backbencher X vote against the next war in the Middle East or against the next Pentagon boondoggle, he will have shown himself insufficiently ready to protect Israel. Such transgressions must not go unpunished.

CounterPunch, CA - Dec 17, 2005
The Democrats: an Impotent & Tolerated Opposition Party

======

Coordinator and signer of the “Pardon Marc Rich” letter to Clinton

Other Rich supporters had financial links to his family. Michael Steinhardt, a New York City hedge-fund manager and a former chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council, was among those who wrote a letter in support of his friend. His note didn't mention that, from the early 1980s through the mid-'90s, Steinhardt managed at least $3 million for Marc Rich, Denise Rich and her father.

What\'s That Smell? - February 5, 2001

The Democratic Leadership Council was now in full swing, under the leadership of Michael Steinhardt, a second-generation New York mobster. Steinhardt chaired the DLC board, and chaired the DLC's Progressive Policy Institute think tank, personally contributing millions in mob-generated funds. Steinhardt's father, in Sing Sing prison as a fence for Meyer Lansky's syndicate, had sent his son cash which Michael turned into a billion through speculation. Steinhardt got other funds for investment from fugitive gangster Marc Rich, who was then looting Russia and Africa.

=====

Michael Steinhardt- Part owner/financier of the New Republic and of the conservative New York Sun

Why would Steinhardt, a Democrat who essentially seeded and watered the Progressive Policy Institute, the think-tank appendage of the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC), want to finance a newspaper that will have the Sun's conservative politics? Why would Hertog, a man of the right and chairman of the Manhattan Institute, the prominent conservative think tank, want a piece of the liberal (more than not, anyway) New Republic? Why, aside from the obvious relief of financial stress, would TNR owner Martin Peretz reduce himself to a minority interest in the magazine he's supported for 28 years?

The answer may be best expressed not by Hertog, Steinhardt, or Peretz, but by Seth Lipsky, editor of the Sun and a man whose decade-long dream of starting a new New York daily is finally coming to fruition. "The right wing of the Democratic Party," Lipsky told me recently, "is a depressed stock." (...)It's exactly on the right-most edge of the Democratic cliff -- where the DLC begins to morph into, say, the American Enterprise Institute; where neoliberalism and neoconservatism, each of which is a vestigial presence now in the twenty-first century, collapse into some new entity (...)

(snip)

Steinhardt chaired the DLC for six years but left in 1996 in disgust, not over Whitewater or women, but because in his first two years in office, according to Steinhardt, Bill Clinton "went wandering back to his historic, ultra-left-wing home" -- as if Clinton were in league with Amiri Baraka and Noam Chomsky.

http://www.prospect.org/print/V13/8/tomasky-m.html

Consider what happened in 1995, when the DLC's Progressive Foundation, angry that so few DLC-ers were nominated to high positions in the Clinton Administration and at Clinton's full-on push for universal healthcare, inaugurated something called the "Third Way" project. The DLC's historian, Kenneth Baer, in his book Reinventing Democrats, says, "There is some evidence that this project was to be the beginning of a third party movement." DLC funder Michael Steinhardt even approached a senator to run against Clinton in the 1996 primaries.

(snip)

When the Progressive Policy Institute, the DLC's new think tank, was founded, its president, Will Marshall, described it as an "analytic guerrilla group." It was built on the model of the Heritage Foundation (From and Marshall consulted Heritage's director, Ed Feulner, for advice)--not as an honest brokerage for research but as a factory for marketing policy positions arrived at in advance (and disseminated in a magazine then called the Mainstream Democrat). Then, in preparation to influence the 1992 presidential race, the DLC formed chapters in every state with a major primary, in order, said Reed, to "create the illusion of a national movement."

http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Michael+Steinhar...

Tomasky's excellent TAP piece also tells us that Hertog is chairman of the prominent right-wing think tank the Manhattan Institute, is affiliated with the American Enterprise Institute, and is a donor to the Club for Growth. Speaks volumes about the New Dems and the New Republic...

((Remember Club for Growth? The guys who launched that attack ad protraying Dean as a Bin-Laden lover?))

Need to research based on Larouche article here: How Gingrich Berserkers
Seized Democratic Party

This message, with its promise of fulfilling the public's seemingly impossible demand for more government activism without more taxes, has proven enormously appealing to members of the policymaking class in both parties. Osborne has been a consultant to Democtratic Governor Lawton Chiles of Florida and to Republican Governor William Weld of Massachusetts. He is a charter member of the "New Paradigm Society" in Washington, a loose group of policy intellectuals that includes Bush aide James Pinkerton. And he is one of several liberal New Paradigmers advising Bill Clinton. (No surprise, then, that in his speeches on the campaign trail Clinton occasionally slips in a line about the need to "reinvent government.")

Reinventing Government. - book reviews (Washington Monthly)

SIEGEL: ...that sends off sparks. And many of the people I
was involved with in this ginger group, the new paradigm society, ended
up being part of the Clinton team. Others ended up influencing
Giuliani.
As in the case of welfare reform nationally, as in the case policing
reform in New York, there really were changes, significant changes.
Part of what was encouraging by the early 1990s, as opposed to today,
is that the recession produced new thinking, fresh approach, a less
partisan approach to the politics.

WHEN YOU'VE LOST THE NEW REPUBLIC . . . Tapped's new favorite thing is the Federal Election Commission database where you can type in anyone's name and see if he or she has donated money to political candidates or parties. (Tapped's old favorite thing was The Washington Post's home buyer database, where you could learn how much your neighbors spent for their apartments.) So check out this nifty little listing (go here and search for "Steinhardt, Michael") that we discovered while trying to see which big-shot New Democrats were supporting which Democratic presidential candidates: According to this list, Michael Steinhardt, former Democratc Leadership Council stalwart and part-owner of The New Republic, gave $2,000 to Bush-Cheney '04 Inc. on June 20, 2003.

Now, we know that there's often little direct relationship between a magazine owner's politics and the views of its writers, but it is a notable thing when one of the more prominent New Democrats around starts financing the continuation of the Bush administration.
