Dem slogan '06, '08?: "Of the people, by the people, for the people!".
A calller on C-SPAN just asked the 2 veterans who are running for Congress on WJ, why they kept talking about party this, party that - and why weren't they talking about "Of the people, etc."?

I think we at DU are not the only people in the country feeling alienated and disconnected and powerless - and feeling that the founding ideals of this country have been totally usurped and replaced with something ugly. We want our country back. We don't want King George, Halliburton, Diebold, spies, thieves, cheats and polluters running things ANYMORE.

I think this will resonate with voters of all stripes. It has just enough anger and defiance - but also indignity and HOPE. We have to reclaim the patriot spirit, if we are going to reclaim our country. I definitely think we can do better than... "We can do better".

Of the people, by the people, for the people!

5. Well said. We need a New Democracy program.
Universal health care. Public financing of elections and the right to have the vote counted. Real national defense. Fair taxes. Fair media.

6. I concur wholeheartedly; the People must be the common denominator
in all political discourse. Sadly, the busines of politics has become corporate business--that is not the spirit of our democratic republic.

7. Democrats have been running on their reputation...
... as the party of the people, but, recently, in action, um, not so much. That's the problem with slogans. You want that to be the rallying point, they've got to follow through, and in the last few years, they haven't. Otherwise, the voters become even more alienated than they are now (difficult as that may seem, it can get even worse).

The Democrats have drifted well to the right in their attempt to not appear greatly different from the Republicans (especially on ill-advised and destructive defense and security matters). A slogan isn't going to change that. Only different candidates will.

Cheers.

I am sick to death of the DINOS. I am all for challenging as many of these stooges in primaries as possible. We have to MAKE our own party stand up again. I was ready to give up on the whole thing after the Alito bend-over. But I'm ready to keep fighting.

Hell yeah, I'm angry. And I want my country back - and my elected representatives working for me - and you.

15. I like how you took the exc slogan the OP suggested & elaborated.
Now if we could just get the Dem Party to use that instead of the rather lame "We can do better". I originally had heard it as "Together We Can Do Better" which I thought at least would reflect the "People" being included in the process. This "we can do better" isn't nearly as good and the OP's suggestion of using a familiar and beloved American phrase is hands down better then both.

16. "We can do better." "Help is on the way."
I also like having a slogan with some substance behind it, so that it isn't just an emotional appeal, but it associated with actual policy proposals. The GOP backs up their slogans with a powerful message of fear, and associations with terrorist attacks. We should associate our slogan with a real program of HOPE.

And I think that OP's suggestion is the perfect way to draw attention to the fact that our founding principles DO have meaning today, and do offer a clear definition of progress.

10. It's our responsibility
I posted this yesterday on another thread
about finding an effective leader. That leader is us.

There can be no doubt that we face a gigantic mess, post idiot.
However, until we all face up to the responsibility of "government by and for the people" we will continue to pile the problems on.
We need to wake up, collectively as all Americans, and regain the power of running our country.
We (collectively) gave up the responsibility when we accepted the (not so) Supreme Court's appointment of the idiot president. We can't continue to delegate the operation of our democracy to elected officials. We must be active and we must be heard.
Those of us on this board know this. Until the masses buy into this, we'll get what we pay for.
What do we want? What is truly important to us?
The illegal occupation of the WH has bankrupted us. But we have to start somewhere.

19. "For the People"
-For education and information-so they will understand.
-For health-so they can live and take part in and with a free nation.
-For prosperous lives with industry and technology creating a better world.
-For the right to chose how the nation's tax billions-trillions and more are spent with honest fiscal integrity.
-For the right to remove anyone, from any office, for any act against the best interest of the people and nation.
-For the right to remove all appointees, and judges from any court, for the least indiscretion, including being appointed by anyone removed from high office!
-For strength, integrity, and power, of this nation, and to regain world honor and respect, it must return to the people.
