Specter Caught Lying to Himself

My apologies if previously posted...
Splat:

That Was Then

" During my stewardship here, I'm going to put everybody under oath when we have testimony, as we do on confirmation hearings."

Judiciary Committee Chairman

Arlen Specter, April 5, 2005

This Is Now

"It is my judgment that it is unnecessary to swear the witness."

Specter, declining to put Attorney General

Alberto R. Gonzales under oath, Feb. 6, 2006

2. Did you send this to Arlan's office?
I know he can't go back and redo Gonzo's hearing, but as I understand it, Gonzo will be back before that same committee. Maybe a few reminders will convince him to change his mind next time.

On another post here on Du the other day, someone said "the one thing you NEVER do is try to tell a Committee Chairman how to run his hearing! They are king in that meeting, they know it, and will fight back EVERY TIME!" I suspect that's right. I don't know what the alternative would have been, but if Arlan is actually convinced that he should change HIS mind, it may be different in the next hearing.

have a been a valid reason. However, in light of his earlier statement, all reasons are over shadowed by the sheer hypocrisy of his later statement. It is abundantly clear that "party" is his only motive. No oversight once again.

3. Gonzales probably refused to appear under oath, Spectre didnt
want to lose face so he pretended it was his idea. Gonzales PRETENDS he would have taken the oath so he can act like he had nothing to hide. Spectre thinks he has reached somekind of statesman like compromise. He is really just a great big GOP T-O-O-L doing the GOP Goosestep RAG

6. I think you're right
I'm sure they were prepared to exert exec privilege or certainly "National security" to avoid the issue, but republicans agreed among themselves that at least a show of accountability and transparency would be best for the party.

The sake of the country is always secondary.

8. When I read this post with Spector's quote,
I got so mad that I copied and pasted his quote from April, 2005 and e-mailed it to him with the snide comment:

"Just in case you forgot what you said, I'm sending this to remind you. Alberto is coming back for another round, don't you think he should be under oath this time?"

I'm not a resident of PA, but I sent it to him anyway.

15. I CANNOT figure out how these fools are getting away with this ...
Gonzales practically giggling while he testified... Cheney SHOOTS someone and people pretend as though it is no big thing when the V.P. pumps his hunting companion full of birdshot and doesn't report it for over 24 hours...
Honestly, is there something in the water supply??
