Texas Governor's Race
Ok, here's the low-down. Perry of course must be defeated. Republindependant Streyhorn is better than Perry, and will probably help our terrible school situation, however, she is not the best pick in my opinion. The Democrat who will run (I forget his name) is a really good pick (so says my friend's father who is the Denton Democrat Commitee Head), however, a Democrat cannot win. Sad but true. Then there is Kinky. Kinky has a great chance at winning and I think he will do a hell of a job changing this state. However, in order to sign his petition to even get him on the ballot, you CANNOT vote in the primaries! Make sure you let everyone know this so that he will at least get on the ballot!

1. Why would a progressive Democrat vote for someone who is for
the war and supports the death penalty?

I think Kinky is an interesting character, but I sure don't want him to be my governor.

Besides, he may call himself an Independent, but he ran for office in Kerr country as a Republican.

5. Chris Bell is the leading Democratic contender.

Editorial: Democratic primary
Houston Chronicle Editorial Board
February 25, 2006

When Chris Bell launched his campaign for governor last year, it seemed a long shot against well-entrenched GOP incumbent Rick Perry. Now that Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn has entered the contest as an independent, the possibility of a splintered Republican vote has Democrats hoping they can win the governor's mansion with a plurality. With his performance as a city councilman and a congressman, Bell has earned the right to represent Democrats in what could be a key contest.

Carole Keeton Strayhorn McClellen Cougar Mellencamp tried to deny Tax Exemption to a Unitarian Universalist congregation. She's a Republican pretending to be an Independent.

I've been a Kinky fan since his Texas Jewboy days. He's a fine songwriter & I've enjoyed his other writings. But I'll be voting for the Democrat, thank you.

6. Don't split the Dem vote
I am not voting in the primary, specifically so I can sign Strayhorn's petition and get some R on R mudslinging through October.

I won't sign for Kinky tho -- I don't see him getting much traction here and would rather vote for a straight Dem -- Bell if possible, Gammage if necessary.

7. strayhorn is FOR intelligent design and against gay rights
FYI - just a female version of Rick Perry.

I'd vote for Kinky just because, although I also believe he would be a lame-duck governor when it came time to marshall the legislative assembly.

The risk of not voting in the primaries for a chance to vote on Kinky could have a backlash too. If you're going to vote democratic ticket and you fail to vote in the primary, the dem candidates may take that as a message of lack of support that could hamstring them in the event that Kinky drops out before the general election.

What strategy is best? What is everyone's barometer on this?

8. My barometer says "Vote Democratic"
Then again, it usually does.

I'm not offended that Kinky befriends odd people--Bill Clinton is also a fan. His platform has some liberal aspects. Just because I defend his right to be Kinky does not mean that I'd vote for him. And I'd prefer he not be on the ballot, since he would split the Democratic votes.

9. strategy
should be the same as anywhere with a texas mentality. that is to run on sunshine, integrity, and real plans to reingage the middle class. We all know about the repubs. destruction tactics, but I think now is the time for responsible clear programs and unlike other elections, this time it may have traction. always if we lose our integrity to win, we are no better then them.

10. Locking
This advocates for an Independent candidate, not a Democrat.
