Subject: UAE Port Deal: Is It About Heroin Smuggling?

Just like many had predicted, post-Taliban Afghanistan has retaken the #1 spot in world opium production.

Afghanistan retakes heroin crown (BBC)

US News and World Report touched on the drug smuggling aspect of the Dubai port back in December. So for all the bluster about the UAE being intolerant of smuggling and an ally on terrorism, it's not difficult to put the pieces together.

An Unlikely Criminal Crossroads (US News)

Bush family = CIA = drug smuggling

It's not like we haven't seen this script before. This time, terrorism is a very easy distraction.

Afghanistan's primary source of income is the drug trade. Opium is traded there like currency. But it eventually must make its way to the customer base around the world.

The top shareholder of Dubai Ports World, UAE President and Emir of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahayan, is the son of the man behind Bank of Commerce and Credit International, which expedited the heroin shipments, and return money flows of the US' first Afghan War in the '80s.

United States Senate, by Senator John Kerry and Senator Hank Brown, December 1992, 102d Congress 2d Session Senate Print 102-140 (fas.org)

I am by no means an expert, but I don't think it's a stretch to think that a direct link between the UAE port and ours could open up a very lucrative trade route between Afghanistan and the US. If this UAE port deal goes through, I believe we will see a dramatic increase in the heroin supply in this country.

and for dessert there is this:

Charles Bowden, a Fly on the Wall Watching the Drug War that's 'Down by the River'

This isn’t some ugly conspiracy by corrupt American presidents. This is what’s called realpolitik. Tolerating the existence of a narco-state in Mexico is preferable to having an economic collapse in Mexico. Successive presidents have looked at the facts and made the same decision. ... It’s simply confronting reality. ... The effort of the border patrol to stop illegal immigration is also simply for show, because if we really bottled up Mexico and a half million people a year couldn’t come north, the economy would collapse.

1. Is anything stopping the heroin trade now?
I'll be damned to know what it could be.
