A handful of states are trying to make abortion illegal and ruin a bunch of people's lives whether the woman herself or the doctor for doing the procedure with five years of jail time. Think about his life and his family and the effect that would have. What if a doctor just does abortions and this bill happens? He will be out of a job and what if his wife doesn't work and she can't find a job and he doesn't know anything else? What about them? What about a young teenage girl who gets pregnant from a rape and she tries to get rid of her baby but kills herself instead? What about the "Patriot Act" and all of it's illegal laws? I'm sure none of those matter either huh? Just a fictional movie that didn't win a damn award.

going on about Academy Awards. IMO, it's lounge material. But I guess I'm guilty of hypocrisy by positing here.

But here's my take on this: Unless some hidden conspiracy, pressuring, or otherwise is unearthed, I will assume the Academy awarded to the film they felt most deserved it. I have seen neither of the two films (I only saw two of the nominees for best picture).

Is it POSSIBLE they bent to political and social pressure? Perhaps. But it's difficult to prove and all this is nothing more than idle speculation. After all, it's not as though Brokeback was ignored. It won atleast two other major awards - Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Bitching about this continuously is like complaining about your favorite sports team not winning its respective championship. Neither have much real life relevance. Being a moderate sports fan, it gets upsetting, but in all honesty, 5 minutes later, I change the channel and see what the hell else is on (or better yet I just check into DU).

After all, my rights aren't threatened and neither is any gay person's if Brokeback lost. And it wouldn't have improved if it had won.

This isn't an election folks. Move on.

Personally, I haven't agreed with most of the Best Picture winners in the last few years. For example, I still haven't a clue how Chicago beat the Pianist for Best Picture a few years ago, and while I thought Million Dollar Baby was good, I'm not sure if I'd say it was the best pick of that year, or Gladiator? Titanic? Entertaining flicks, but their artistic merit was lacking IMO... but hey...I'm not on the Academy. I could go on...They have their taste in films. I have mine. I'll try to see both Brokeback and Crash. I've heard some say that Crash is manipulative and preachy. And my guess is I would fall asleep during Brokeback...

And if after watching the film, I did or didn't like them, that doesn't mean I'm homophobic or racist. It just means I didn't like a film.
