Anybody read Molly Ivins newest column on the SD abortion
Edited on Sat Mar-11-06 09:14 AM by leftyladyfrommo
controversy? Boy did she nail it - again.

I was watching the Lehrer program when the maniac from SD was saying when it was OK for a woman to get an abortion. Basically it was OK if the trauma she had just endured at the hands of a brutal rapist madman would cause her to commit suicide if she couldn't get an abortion. And we should go back to the good ole days of the shotgun wedding in all other cases.

The only good thing about that bill is that it doesn't take the mother's health into consideration so it will get kicked right out of court.

I feel like we have just moved 100 year's back in time. Any day now someone will propose that we try slavery all over again.

1. Before Roe v. Wade
I traveled to a state where abortion was not a criminal offense. I had to sign a paper saying that I would kill myself if I didn't receive an abortion. Even where the procedure was marginally "legal" you had to admit you were unbalanced to get one.

2. I just read that Tennessee is not far behind.
Pretty soon everyone will have to make it to California and Oregon - just like the old days, huh?

3. Same here
I had to meet with three psychiatrists, tell each of them that I'd kill myself if I couldn't end the pregnancy, pay them in cash (they were part of a sympathetic group, along with the ob-gyn), have them write letters to that effect, have the 5- man (yep, all men) Abortion Board (yep, that's what it was called) at the hospital where my ob-gyn was affiliated review the letters, and vote on whether or not the procedure could take place.

I still remember getting a call from my doctor, as I was about to board the bus that would take me to that city, telling me that the vote was 2-2, and he didn't know what was going to happen. I got on the bus, anyway, and by the time I arrived there, my best college friend was waiting for me with the news that we had the go-ahead.

At 7 pm on a Friday night, I was rolled into surgery. Yep, general anesthesia, the whole thing.

All paid in cash.

Two days in the hospital, in a private room with the lock on the outside of the door. In the maternity wing.

I ended up engaged to the ob-gyn.

Then I left the country.

Five years later, I was a law student and Roe v. Wade was born.

6. Frightening AND expensive.
Yes, everything had to be cash. Congratulations on your career as an attorney. I'm sure you've put your education to good use, and obviously, you're on the compassionate side of the issue. I will never vote for an anti-choice candidate.

9. The experience wasn't lost on an of us, I suspect
Thank you for opening the door that reminded me of my experience.

We have to tell these stories so that the youngsters understand exactly what it was like and what's at stake for them. There's an odd sense I get that Roe v. Wade having been settled law for so long, the next generations think that's how it always was, always will be.

Unless they get busy - and outraged - they'll be right back where we were. I was lucky, so were you, because we had the resources and the wherewithal to get our problems taken care of. I don't think it's going to be that "easy" today.

We are all sisters because of this.

Welcome to DU, pup, and thanks again.

7. The Court shouldn't even hear this case. It should be tossed out
immediately as decided law. Right, Mr. Chief Justice?
