DeLay Gets Court to Halt, Void Subpoenas

Rep. Tom DeLay Gets Court to Halt and Void Prosecutor's Subpoenas in Money Laundering Case
By SUZANNE GAMBOA
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON - A Texas appeals court Monday granted Rep. Tom DeLay's request to stop a prosecutor from filing subpoenas in the former majority leader's pending money laundering case.

The Third Court of Appeals panel in Austin, Texas, also said that several subpoenas issued by Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle are null and void because DeLay's trial is on hold.

In addition, any outstanding subpoenas issued before the trial was put on hold are suspended during the stay, the court said.

DeLay is awaiting trial on money laundering charges related to accusations that he funneled corporate money, largely banned for campaigns in Texas, through the Republican National Committee and a Texas political committee into the campaign coffers of several 2002 GOP legislative candidates.

1. This means nothing
Standard practice. The trial's on hold, so nothing goes forward through the court.

No big deal. Ronnie'll be ready with those subpoenae when the time is right.

4. Maybe I practiced law for too long,
or maybe the media on all levels is just indiscriminate and vapid (could that be????), but how is any of this news?

It's a non-event.

7. Because to the heartland goober republicans...
It sounds like DeLay won something. It will give them something to feel positive about. And after all, isn't that the modern media's job, to prop up the GOP?

5. Let the shredding begin,
The cat is out of the bag. ?He should have held off on the subpoenas until the appellate court issued its mandate and the case was back before the trial court.

8. It's NEVER a good idea to shred anything, but worse if you know
there will be subpoenas. It's called obstruction, and you go to prison for that!!!!

I agree with the earlier posters. Earl issued the subpoenas as a warning shot.
