The Republican excuses for voting to raise debt limit (on NPR's ME):
Edited on Thu Mar-16-06 11:12 AM by 1932
On NPR this morning I heard a story about the vote on the debt limit. They had quotes from three Republican senators. They had three PATHETIC quotes from Republican Senators.

First, Oren Hatch basically said he has no reason to exist. He said that there's no real choice in the vote. Because of some unexplained mechanics of the budget process, you have to vote yes. Oren, what do you do for a living? Are you a human being who makes choices about how million of Americans will live their lives, or are you a cog in a machine who has not control over his choices? Citizens of Utah, note that in your next election you might have a choice between a cog in a machine and a human being. Please vote for the human being.

The next Republican quoted said he hadn't made up his mind yet. Judging from the acoustics, it sounded like he was saying that over his shoulder as he ran away from the reporter. He also sounded like he was lying. Those Republicans sure are nervous about going on the record with their political opinions.

The third quote was the best. I'm not sure who it was -- it might have been the other Senator from Utah. He said that 9 Trillion might sound like a big number, but what really counts is the size of the deficit as portion of the economy, thus implying that it wasn't that big of a deal. In a rare moment, NPR made an effort to report the news accurately. They checked that statement and, would you believe it, the deficit is higher as a percentage of GDP (66%) than it has been for a half century.

So, out of three explanations for likely votes in favor of increasing the debt limit, the Republicans were 3 for 3 in coming up with really stupid explanations.

1. One says it's unavoidable, one avoids it, and one says it does matter.
Portraits in courage.

Expect a vote Friday evening, with congress immediately jumping into the waiting limos to take them to airport named after the previous record holder for busting the budget.

4. 9/11 changed everything
Shit, they use that excuse for everything. And the sheeple will go, "Ok, whatever you say!"

Terror terror and tax cuts (which fits in with raising the debt limit.) Can't purtect 'Merca without spending more!
