Will the REAL Al Gore Please Stand Up!
Edited on Thu Mar-16-06 04:46 PM by wyldwolf
Some Democrats are pining for Al Gore. Democrats of all stripes. Big "D" Democrats and little "d" Democrats. The blogs and message forums ache for Al Gore. And Al Gore obviously has an ax to grind with the Republican party in general and the current Republican administration in particular. Belonging to a now elite group of presidential candidates who won the popular vote yet lost the electoral college nod, Al Gore has probably plotted his revenge for six years.

But if he decides to run, which Al Gore are we going to see? Will we see the man who was part of the DLC's freshman class in 1986, the father of Bill Clinton's welfare reform, promoter of faith-based initiatives, proponent of free trade, and foreign policy hawk?

Or will we see the boisterous fire and brimstone liberal who has condemned the administration of George W. Bush for a host of disastrous domestic and foreign policy decisions?

I suspect we'll see both. Though I believe Al Gore is 100% sincere in his criticism of Bush, I'm also sure there is a little "Damn! I'd be doing a much better job" feeling thrown into the mix. And there is no evidence to suggest that Al Gore's position on any number of issues has changed since he left office in 2000.

At the end of the day, after all the swiftboating rightwing smears of "liberal" are thrown his way, Al Gore is going to have to convince moderate Democrats and independents that he is still a centrist and not the leftwing firebrand he has been portrayed as of late. If he wants to run and win.

2. The "real AL Gore" is the Al Gore that we have seen in...
the past 5 years. The liberal/progressive/populist who has taken on *. Gore only became a DLC/Conservative Dem because he saw what happened to his father in 1970.

3. First time I've heard that.

Got a link or bio reference?

4. Will a Democrat other than Gore, Feingold or Murtha please stand up?
I don't agree with your premise. Here's my premise about Gore: when he takes a stand he's usually right.
