why doesn't Casey Sheehan have a grave stone?
A fundie at work came up to me out of the blue today and asked me that. At first I didn't believe him but after a little searching I found what he was talking about Michelle "lets put 'em in camps!" Malkin had a link to it today. Is this true?

1. Maybe the family is afraid it will be desecrated
I was in Crawford with Cindy in August and I saw with my own eyes how hateful and downright mean her detractors are. If I was Casey's family, I would be scared his gravesite would be vandalized.

2. true or not, what is the point of the observation?
Many families deal with grief differently. One woman in my grief counseling group kept her husband's ashes for 5 years, even though her religion suggests a one year wait.

I cannot think of a LEGITIMATE reasons to bring this up, other than swiftboating Ms. Sheehan for no good purpose.

9. Yep, it is nobody's damn business at all. But that won't stop the
freepers from making a big deal about it.

It is amazing to me that some people think they somehow have to right to tell someone else how they should honor their loved ones. Maybe she doesn't yet know what kind of headstone she wants. Or maybe she doesn't want a headstone at all. It is her decision.

7. The fundies want everyone in this country to act and think like them..

8. I'd ask the fundie....
and your point is...?

What is he trying to prove? Is he/she insinuating that Cindy Sheehan doesn't care about Casey? Personally, I think whether or not there's a gravestone is Cindy's own damn business and she doesn't have to explain it to anybody.

12. see that is bullshit
I support Cindy but come one you can't pick and choose what part of your grief your going to share. That's being opportunistic. Especially when you use your grief to highlight a serious political issue in the way that she did. Someone mentioned that it could be due to cremation and that makes the most sense to me. Does anyone one know if that is valid?

16. No one has said you don't support Cindy--you're a bit defensive here.
And it is entirely the family's bisiness, not ours.

18. Buried: Tuesday, April 13, Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery
Edited on Mon Mar-20-06 05:18 PM by mzteris
Casey Sheehan was buried on Tuesday with full military honors. The family has not found a place for his Purple Heart and Bronze Star, which remain in their blue leather cases. But in the front window hangs a small red-and-white flag with gold tassels and a gold stitched star. This is the unwanted award given mothers of war casualties.

edit : additional info

At the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery, a brisk wind forced three honor guards, instead of the usual two, to fold the flag. Then three volleys of gunfire, in Specialist Sheehan's honor, filled the air.

19. So because she speaks out on the war
she has to share the reason for no gravestone for Casey? And that's "opportunistic"?

You sure as hell CAN pick and choose which part of your grief you're going to share. She has every right to speak out against the war, and she has every right to maintain as much privacy as she wants about Casey. She's a grieving mother who disagrees with the war. The press picked up on her plight. America picked up on the story. Because of this, she looses the right to keep some aspects of her life concerning Casey secret? Don't think so!!

23. Why is it anyone's business where her son is buried and how?
Does that somehow negate the fact that he gave his life for his country? Does that change the fact that he openly disagreed about going into Iraq?

I still don't see why it has anything to do with you or Michelle Malkin or anyone else.

20. Cindy Sheehan has been quoted
"Cindy Sheehan has been quoted (repeatedly, if you Google search) as saying she chose not to get a headstone for her son’s grave because she didn’t want tourists getting their photos taken next to it, and she wanted to respect the privacy of others who visit the graveyard for their own personal reasons.

And yes, there is a small plaque, no bigger than a dinner plate on the grave site.

****

Here is a pic I found (ignore the rest of the website.) I think it's from the Vanity Fair pictorial. The "other pics" circulating are obviously fakes.

25. I knew I'd seen a photo--do you know where this came from?
Incidentally, veteran's cemetaries always place just a small headstone--it's an honor indeed, not a disgrace to have one.

My father does--mikeanike, you got a problem with my dad's (WW2 Army Air Force corporal) headstone?

24. considering the nasty things that have already been done to
various memorials for Casey and other lost soldiers, perhaps she is just keeping the gravesite "quiet". That way her son can rest in peace and not have a bunch of idiots tearing his headstone down like they did with his and other crosses in Crawford or stealing his headstone like they did his boots.
