Kean arrives too late to be seen with Cheney at event

He blamed bad traffic. The fund-raiser in Newark was aimed at ousting U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez.

By Cynthia BurtonInquirer Staff Writer

NEWARK, N.J. - Vice President Cheney flew into this depressed city yesterday to embrace the New Jersey GOP's hope of taking out a Democratic U.S. senator in a blue state.

There was a problem, though. Likely Republican candidate Thomas H. Kean Jr. missed his speech.

Kean, a state senator, said he left a legislative session in Trenton shortly after 4:15, got stuck in traffic that was snarled by vice presidential security and jogged down Newark's Broad Street to reach the fund-raiser.

Snip...

Kean, perspiring, said to reporters, "I just got here. I ended up running down the street to get here."

Asked whether he endorsed the Bush administration's policies, Kean said, "This campaign is going to be about the people of New Jersey."

1. Intentional delay
I can't imagine any candidate wanted to appear with "18% approval" Cheney. Seems like that would be instant death to a campaign. Blaming the late arrival on a traffic jam avoids unnecessary embarrassment.

Bush and Cheney would help the Repugs more if they'd just stay home and shut the hell up!

4. I'm sure the voters appreciated the traffic jam too.

I long for the day that the only police escort that Cheney gets is the one that escorts him to prison for the rest of his life.

6. I'm with you!
I wonder if they'd have his crash ambulance trailing his procession. If not, and he were going to a real jail, they'd probably just as well go straight to the cemetery. How sad...

5. I am quite sure he WAS stuck in traffic.

And we all know--timing is everything. I have to travel well over one hundred miles, into St. Louis, occasionally, and I know fully well that a difference of ten minutes on departure can make a difference of thirty to forty five minutes on the other end. I also know it doesn't matter what time that doctor's appointment is, if my intention is to get there on time,I will be there.

So he has his plausible deniability and a perfectly believable story with proof and no sloppiness. The real twill (inside joke)is that he got to say, "Cheney you, Cheney," without busting protocol. Ain't love grand?

Oh, by the way, he wouldn't duck Cheney, Cheney'd shoot'm!
