This poem is from my sweet niece. My response is beneath it. After re-reading I realize that I could have done a much better job, but I was in a hurry and just needed to get some of this off my chest. I never really addressed the fact that the whold poem itself is built on lies and racism - just targeting the easily-led such as herself. Anyway, here it is. Oh, and later, I sent her the link to
http://www.commondreams.org/views06/0328-28.htm - a story of that first soldier who died. (Just reading the poem again makes me sick to my stomach).

Illegal Immigrants Poem
I cross ocean,
poor and broke,
Take bus,
see employment folk.
Nice man treat me
good in there,
Say I need to
see welfare.
Welfare say,
"You come no more,
We send cash
right to your door."
Welfare checks,
they make you wealthy,
Medicaid it keep
you healthy!
By and by,
I got plenty money,
Thanks to you,
American dummy.
Write to friends
in motherland,
Tell them 'come
fast as you can.'
They come in turbans
and Ford trucks,
I buy big house
with welfare bucks
They come here,
we live together,
More welfare checks,
it gets better!
Fourteen families,
they moving in,
But neighbor's patience
wearing thin.
Finally, white guy
moves away,
Now I buy his house,
and then I say,
"Find more aliens
for house to rent."
And in the yard
I put a tent.
Send for family
they just trash,
But they, too,
draw the welfare cash!
Everything is
very good,
And soon we
own the neighborhood.
We have hobby
it's called breeding,
Welfare pay
for baby feeding.
Kids need dentist?
Wife need pills?
We get free!
We got no bills!
American crazy!
He pay all year,
To keep welfare
running here.
We think America darn good place!
Too darn good for the white man race.
If they no like us, they can scram,
Got lots of room in Pakistan.
SEND THIS TO EVERY AMERICAN TAXPAYER YOU KNOW.
MY RESPONSE:
"XXXX, Honey, I'm sorry, I can't agree with this. If you were hungry and needed to feed yourself or your children, and you knew that you could get jobs or help elsewhere, wouldn't you go? The problem isn't just the illegals - yes I do believe it is a problem. But we need to change our archaic immigration laws, seal our borders to protect us, and also go after the people who hire the illegals, as well as stop it from happening. After all, if the jobs weren't there they wouldn't come.
Did you know that corporations are making the biggest profits in history, yet are spending the least amount on labor and salaries in history? Or that CEO's salaries rose an average of 21% last year, while the salaries of the average worker rose %0. Let's go after these greedy people too! And then let's pressure Mexico to start taking care of their own and stop letting them get away with sending their people here!
Studies show that most illegals are here on expired visas anyway, they didn't run across the borders. It's a very complicated problem and we need to all work together to come up with a solution. I also heard recently that today we have a workforce of approximately 10% illegals. In years past, it's been higher. Why are we worrying about this now? Is it to take our eye off the craziness going on in the Middle East where all hell is about to break lose? I'm afraid. I'm very afraid.
Did you know that one of the first soldiers killed in Iraq (if not the very first) was an illegal immigrant? How they get into the military is one thing, but they do serve and die. And that doesn't make me feel any safer, because if he could get in, what's to stop someone who wants to HARM the country from getting in. In the past 5 years, I've seen a great country become something I don't even recognize. I hope to God for our kids and our grandchildren, and all our family and future generations that we can hang on to the precious gift of democracy and our beloved country itself.
(Later, through CommonDreams, I found out that the soldier apparently had a green card. Does this make him legally eligible to serve?)
