Cunningham stories honored for excellence
By Jeff McDonald
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

April 18, 2006

The San Diego Union-Tribune and Copley News Service shared a Pulitzer Prize yesterday for reporting that disclosed the worst case of bribe-taking in the history of Congress and led to the imprisonment of a corrupted lawmaker and war hero.

The news organizations were honored with journalism's highest prize for revealing that Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham, R-Rancho Santa Fe, traded lucrative defense contracts for millions of dollars in cash, lavish antiques and other payoffs.

Less than six months after the initial report, Cunningham's political career was over. At first he denied wrongdoing, but then he abruptly resigned his office, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to eight years and four months in prison. The criminal investigation has since widened and is continuing.

2. Another example of editorial board vs. reporting out of phase
Kudos to U-T reporters for investigating that crooked piece of crap Cunningham. But guess who the editorial writers continually endorsed when election time rolled around?

I wish they would investigate Joseph Perkins, their former wingnut columnist, and find out whether he was taking money from the government to write his pro-Bush propaganda.

Perkins was one seriously fucked-up writer who set the tone of the editorial page, but who suddenly decided to immediately "retire" once Armstrong Williams admitted to being on the take.
