His taxonomy is off, and his reasoning is subsumed by partisanship.
(He also doesn't know as much about language as he thinks he does.)

His column reveals one useful thing: anxiety about Dean. However, given his track record, his reasoning there probably isn't too good either.

This is not really about a pro/anti-DLC wedge. Agreement or disagreement with the DLC is a legitimate argument to have, just not mediated through Safire's warped view of the world.
