Poll question: Moussaoui jury poll and a question to discuss about the inevitable spin. |
|
The poll: What do you think the jury was? >For death/For life in prison<
Now the question ....... does this play against Bush? Is it just more to drag his numbers down? Or not?
I see it as a vindication of those who've said he has bungled badly the follow-up and settlement for the crimes of 9/11. I don't see any way he can spin this favorably for him.
Please please PLEASE .... this is not a thread to discuss the death penalty issue. Please confine comments to the topic at hand.

1. Almost everything in life can be explained by the 80/20 theory |
|
so I played it safe. 80 for death 20 against it.

will be against Republicans generally who support the "terror initiatives" of this administration, but Bush as "war president" is Commander-in-Chief.
If this Republican Party "allowed" the Dubai port deal to go through, it may seem logical to some voters that "they" would "allow" a terrorist to "escape" death.
I'm not sure that's sound reasoning but I could see it playing out that way, with the outcome being negative for hardass Republicans who can't close the deal on harbor safety and the long-promised capture of bin Laden.
Some white-knuckled Republicans might begin asking if tapping all those domestic phone lines is justified if all it results in is "leniency" for terrorists.
Agreed. There is a potential here for a drag downward for the war president.

(I agree with what you said, by the way.)
..... I can spin this against Bush even if I take the position that I wanted his ass to fry! (Disclaimer, I did NOT want the death penalty for this case. I didn't even want the damned stupid trial on the charges as they were set out.)
But anyway .... let's say you wanted this guy to have his severed head displayed on a pike in the town square. This was a trial in Bush/Gonzo's FEDERAL court. A court right down the street from that five sided building that was struck on 9/11 and where lives were lost. This was trial in a FEDERAL court in a town where many people knew actual victims. This was a FEDERAL trial in a town where kids in school know a kid who lost a parent in the attacks. This FEDERAL trial, in THIS town, with a jury of THESE citizens, couldn't get a death verdict.
In THAT town ..... in this FEDERAL trial ..... Bush couldn't get the death penalty.
Yup ... no way they can spin this for their benefit.

They prevented Moussaoui's martyrdom.
I won't bet on this, but watch and see.
It scares me sometimes that I seem to sometimes think like the spinbastards at the Heritage Foundation and that ilk.
Edit--I can't say I'm disappointed at all with the verdict, btw.

90-10, I would want to be optimistic and think only 80% of them were sadistic, but 90 10 i guess wold be more accurate, I'm thinking.

8. Mercifully, they can't use 9/11 to their favor this time. |
|
I don't think it can be successfully spun for the WH.
Most people aren't aware enough of it, for one thing, and it won't sway the vast majority that are already pissed.
The fact that Moussaoui didn't get the DP may even weaken W in the eyes of a few of the diehards.
Not to mention that the trial pointed out much of the ineptitude of top level Washington AJ officials who paid their inferiors--who tried to warn them-- no mind whatsoever.
This is a loser for the WH all around.
OTOH, I can't feel celebratory about it--not in the least.
