country joe mcdonald's newest anti-war song--anyone know the lyrics?
Once again, I look to the marvelously knowledgable denizens of DU for help. I had the privilege yesterday of hearing Country Joe McDonald as part of the Jefferson Starship Family Galactic Reunion concert here in OCC. He sang a fairly new anti-war song whose title I didn't catch--the lyrics included lines about "american shame" and "gold star mothers and fathers". From what I did hear, the song was at least inspired by the death of Casey Sheehan.

If anyone knows the lyrics to this heartbreaking song, I would greatly appreciate having them. I have to call it a night very soon, so if you could email them to me, I would truly appreciate that.

Thank all of you in advance.

12. No, it doesn't look like he's coming anywhere near Anchorage

He was up here years and years ago, like back in the late '70s, I think, playing by himself in a little club. I went up to him after the show and gave him a big hug - I couldn't help myself. He seemed a bit surprised at my enthusiasm, but we chatted for a few minutes, and I got to profess my love. :loveya: That "Electric Music for the Mind and Body" was my favorite tripping album back in the day. :hippie:

3. This one? Cakewalk to Baghdad
Edited on Mon May-08-06 12:58 AM by CC
Lyrics and music by Bruce Barthol © 2003

I remember back, before we whacked Iraq
I was watching the news, were we gonna attack?
A man named Richard Perle came on and talked
He said going to Baghdad would be a cakewalk

Cakewalk to Baghdad,
Cakewalk to Baghdad

It went real easy,
Took a couple of weeks
Tore down that statue
Set those Saddamites free
The Frogs and the Krauts, they feel real bad,
They missed out cakewalkin' into Baghdad

Cakewalk to Baghdad,
Cakewalk to Baghdad

Next we're gonna cakewalk into Teheran,
Gonna cakewalk to Damascus and Pyong-yin-yang
When we strut on in,
Everybody's gonna cheer
They'll be wavin' old glory,
We'll have kegs of beer, just like that...

Cakewalk to Baghdad,
Cakewalk to Baghdad

Cakewalk to Baghdad,
Cakewalk to Baghdad

Now moms and dads don't worry 'bout
Your soldier boys and girls
We're just sending them cakewalkin'
Around the world
When the coffins come home and the flag unfurls
Cheer for Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and Perle

Cakewalk to Baghdad,
Cakewalk to Baghdad

Do you think we'll see those Bush boys patrollin' the streets
Like our soldiers got to do in Basram and Tikrit?
We gonna see Richard Perle cakewakin' 'round
The streets and alleys of Baghdad town?

Cakewalk to Baghdad,
Cakewalk to Baghdad

Easy to cakewalk in ... not so easy to cakewalk out.

If it is a different one let me know, would like to hear it.

5. Barthol was the bass player for The Fish
What did we have to do? Start a war to get the band back together?

Good for them, I was a big fan when I was young....Still have all his vinyl

for us, but we had to go to war to notice.

4. Here's the lyrics to Country Joe's song: "Support The Troops":
Beat the drum, wave the flag,
For those who won’t be coming back.
Numbers rising, build another Wall
For those who answered the Country’s call.

Support the troops
Support the troops

Gold Star Mothers, Gold Star Dads
Left with nothing but a folded flag.
Gold Star Brothers, Sisters too
Feel their pain, it could be you!

Support the troops
Support the troops

Chorus:
Chicken hawk, draft dodging, son Of A Bush
Look at all the damage you did!
American war in the Holy Land
Blood for oil, not in my name!
Oh, not in my name
Oh, not in my name
Oh, not in my name

Some day soon, don’t know when
We’ll see the wounded women and men
Lining the walls of American streets
Hands out begging for something to eat.

Support the troops
Support the troops

Forgotten heroes from a forgotten war
Wondering "What were we fighting for?"
World War III around the bend
That’s what we get with the George Bush Plan.

Support the troops
Support the troops

Chorus:
Chicken hawk, draft dodging, son Of A Bush
Look at all the damage you did!
American war in the Holy Land
Blood for oil, not in my name!
Oh, not in my name
Oh, not in my name
Oh, not in my name
Not in my name
American shame
Not in my name
American shame.

6. THANK YOU, this is the song. the people at the concert were cheering
and applauding this song (and you have to realize, this is a heavily military town) and roaring about the "chicken hawk" line.

11. My generation's answering the call for protest songs again...
...Makes me proud, and I hope the kids find them singable enough to pass along -- but at the same time I keep hoping hard that more young artists like Pink and the Dixie Chicks will write some new material that will catch fire the way "Masters of War" and "Fixin to Die Rag" did with us. Music is an extremely powerful way to carry a message.

In the meantime, thanks for passing these along. I'm adding them to my file of lyrics.

Hekate

15. What I would really like to see is a recapitulation to Woodstock.
By that, I mean a tour featuring acts that addressed the Vietnam War like Country Joe, CSN&Y, Arlo Guthrie, Santana, etc. Not only is the music stellar, but think of this: these guys are of the same generation as * and not some young sucks challenging a father-figure in the White House. It has a different resonance by its symbolism.

16. I think we need a cross-generational Woodstock.
The original, the one and only, Woodstock was a group of people united for peace and music .. (and a few other things). A new "Woodstock" could include entertainers across the board, such as:

Green Day
System of a Down
Pink
Dixie Chicks
CSN&Y and solo Neil
Joan Baez
Country Joe
Tool
George Scherer
Steve Earle
Jackson Browne
REM
Bruce Springsteen
Bonnie Raitt
James Blunt
Willie Nelson
Ministry

And maybe Bob Dylan would swing by for this one.
