Ed Garvey: Bankrupting Milwaukee plays into neocons' plans

-snip-

"Policy Research Institute" my, my, a name that drips of erudition and, of course, non-partisanship. The image of policy wonks working at computers, sorting and organizing data comes to mind. These dedicated souls have no political agenda, they are working for the commonwealth. Sure, Ole, and global warming is a myth.

-snip-

Read these words from Lightbourn: "Within two years, Milwaukee County will be insolvent." County Executive Scott Walker, the former governor wannabe, teed up this report when he predicted recently that the county, under his leadership, might have to file for bankruptcy protection (fiscal, not intellectual). They must think we have "stupid" stamped on our foreheads.

What is the answer? WPRI is glad you asked. They want to appoint not elect a fiscal control board to oversee the county. I'm not making this up. This board would be empowered to "change county systems, restructure the workforce (a euphemism for busting unions), seek changes in the state's mediation/arbitration law, and (ah, here it is!) spin off operations such as the zoo and the airport and explore merging the pension plan with the state's."

In plain English, it would be the privatization of Milwaukee County.

3. The RW county exec wants to sell off country assets.
there has been talk of the international airport, golf courses, swimming pools, the county zoo, the "county grounds" etc.

They want to handle the privatization through a selected rather than appointed body. Sound like a situation ripe for raiding by republican buccaneers? You betcha.
