Gov. Jeb Bush resisted entreaties from political colleagues and the Republican Party to enter the U.S. Senate race.
“I tried to talk him into it on more than one occasion,” Sen. Mel Martinez noted this afternoon. “But he didn’t show a bit of interest.”
The governor, who on Monday asserted that Longboat Key Rep. Katherine Harris would be unable to beat Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson next November, had urged alternatives to step into the contest. Gov. Bush has said repeatedly that he would not run for office, and intends instead to return to private life.
Even with several last-minute filings in Tallahassee by people declaring candidacies, Harris is widely viewed as the favorite to win the Sept. 5 Florida primary – but lose to Nelson. National Republican Senatorial Committee chairman Elizabeth Dole signaled this morning that the Florida race was a tough bet. She listed names of states in which the GOP would run strong; Florida was not one of them.
